UFC Fight Night 26 Results: Chael Sonnen Submits Shogun Rua

sonnenufcfightnight26Chael Sonnen has always been one to talk a big game and on this night, he backed it up with one of the biggest wins in his career.

Sonnen earned an impressive first-round victory over former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua by making him submit at the 4:47 mark with a guillotine choke in the main event of UFC Fight Night 26 at the TD Garden in Boston, MA.

Sonnen (29-13-1) took control off the fight from the opening bell, immediately taking Rua down and controlling him on the ground with his wrestling skills and pounding on him until he was able to get in position for the choke.

After the fight, Sonnen quickly went into trash talk mode to call out his latest target:  Wanderlei Silva.

“I’m the man of the hour too sweet to be sour,” Sonnen exclaimed. “Wanderlei Silva, in three months, it’s you and the bad guy.”

Brooke Hogan Released by TNA

Multiple sources are reporting that TNA has released Brooke Hogan.  This is the latest in an ongoing series of cost-restructuring moves by the company.

Her release is surprising if only because her father, Hulk Hogan, is seen as such an asset to the company.  Dixie’s desire to keep Hulk happy made Brooke Hogan seem untouchable.  On the other hand, Brooke’s TV role in TNA had played itself out. She was the former head of the knockouts division, and most recently played Bully Ray’s (kayfabe) wife.

Hopefully TNA will use this as an opportunity to re-establish itself.   The multiple high-profile releases over the summer, most of which hit the active roster or road agents, left a black-eye on the face of the company. Cutting unnecessary “name-only” talent seems like the most logical next step.

Dixie Carter has yet to release an official statement.

Bellator MMA Adds King Mo vs. Emmanuel Newton Rematch To PPV Card

Bellator MMA is going all out for their first outing on PPV. The organization added another fight as they announced Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal will get his rematch against Emmanuel Newton for the Bellator MMA interim light heavyweight title at Bellator 106.

The California based promotion created an interim title fight due to Bellator MMA light heavyweight champion Attila Vegh suffering a shoulder injury.

Lawal and Newton first met at Bellator 90 when Newton knocked out Lawal with a spinning backfist to advance in the light heavyweight, with Newton winning that season’s tournament.

Lawal came back and won the Summer Series tournament to get the rematch with Newton.

The former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion feels the fight is already over.

“Listen, I’m going to be real honest about this. Emanuel is fake as hell,” Lawal said. “He runs his mouth about being a black skinhead or something, and likes to act real hard. He’s as hard as baby shit. I’m going to destroy this guy. He landed a shot on me in our first fight, nothing more than that. I’m better than him in every facet of the game. I didn’t even shoot on him that first fight. I can take this fight anywhere I want it, and I will. It’s over. I’m taking that belt in Long Beach, bringing it back to Las Vegas, and no one is getting it back. Not Vegh, Not Rampage. Not Tito, not anyone. It’s mine. Payback is bitch, Emanuel.”

Newton feels he knocked out Lawal once and will do it again on a bigger platform.

“I’m not going to spout off and trash Mo, I don’t have to do that,” Newton proclaimed. “I know Mo is going to run his mouth and try to sell his game, but I don’t have anything to prove. I’m the one that knocked him out, and he’s the one that has to deal with that loss on his record, not me. I did it once, and I’m going to do it again, this time on an even bigger stage. History likes to repeat itself, and November 2nd Mo’s going to have to deal with another big loss on his record.”

Bellator 106 takes place on Saturday, November 2nd from the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. The main event will feature Rampage Jackson facing Tito Ortiz and the co-feature will be Michael Chandler defending his Bellatot lightweight title against former champion Eddie Alvarez in a long awaited rematch.

UFC Releases Cast For Upcoming Season Of The Ultimate Fighter

The UFC released today the full cast of fighters who will be on this upcoming season of the Ultimate Fighter. The 18th season of the reality show starts on September 4th with a two hour premiere on Fox Sports 1 featuring 16 men and 16 women bantamweight fighters who will then fight to just get into the house. The coaches will be UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.

“This season of The Ultimate Fighter was monumental, as we had women as coaches and competitors – fighting and living together with the men – for the first time ever,” UFC president Dana White said. “Obviously the fierce rivalry between Ronda and Miesha is going to get everyone’s attention, but it doesn’t take away from their dedication and success as coaches and the level of talent this season. One of the things that always makes The Ultimate Fighter great is the fights, and this season continues to deliver. Thoughts on Darren Young, and Being Different in Professional Wrestling

tumblr_mi9mesCbW11rlzmqeo1_500Well kids, prepare for the backlash.

Darren Young came out earlier today as WWE’s first openly gay superstar. That is, he’s the first to reveal himself while still under contract with the company. Several previous wrestlers have announced themselves as gay – the late Chris Kanyon and Orlando Jordan immediately come to mind – but most had distanced themselves from WWE when they finally disclosed their sexual orientation.

WWE immediately announced its support for Darren Young. Both Triple H and Stephanie McMahon took to Twitter and praised Young’s courage, and the company sent out a press release using the word “proud” and saying that it would “continue to support him as a WWE Superstar.” Company frontman John Cena even did an interview with TMZ offering his own congratulations.

Unfortunately, Young has to deal with a public that’s not quite ready for his openness. The public-opinion tide is certainly turning in favor of gay-rights equality, but we haven’t reached that point where all of society is ready to accept it with open arms. And just because the general public thinks one way, it doesn’t mean the pro wrestling world follows that same path.  [Read more...]

WWE Superstar Darren Young Publicly Comes Out

WWE superstar Darren Young (Fred Rosser) of the PrimeTime Players revealed in an interview with TMZ.com that he is gay, becoming the first active WWE performer to come out.

In the interview, You was asked whether a gay wrestler could be successful in the WWE.  “Absolutely, look at me,” Young said while laughing.  ” I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”

Young went on to say that he didn’t think his orientation mattered and he hoped to that he could help make a difference to others who may also want to come out.

“I’m happy to be who I am,” Young said. “I’m comfortable with myself. I’m happy to be living my dream. I’m happy to be in LA for Summerslam for WWE.  To be honest with you, I’m happy with myself. Some people might not like it. Some people will like it, but, I’m here to please myself. I’m here to be happy. It’s very important I’m happy with myself.”

Cena, who also stated that his older brother is gay, added that he does not think there will be any problems in the WWE locker room with Young coming out.

“It’s all about being professional, Darren Young is a consummate professional,” Cena said.

WWE Executive Vice President of Creative Stephanie McMahon also commended Young on her Twitter account.

Nick Diaz Offered To Fight Lyoto Machida At Middleweight

Could we see Nick Diaz come out of retirement? UFC President Dana White hopes so, as White revealed during a special Q&A at Barrio Cantina in Boston for a fundraising effort for The Shawn Thornton Foundation that he talked to Diaz today and offered him a fight against Lyoto Machida at middleweight.

“I talked to Diaz today, and I made him an offer, so we’ll see what happens,” White said. “He had been talking about going to 185 pounds. Machida has been talking about going to 185 pounds. So we wanted to see if he wanted to fight Machida at 185.”

White said that Diaz told him that he would get back to him.

We haven’t seen Diaz in the octagon since his welterweight title loss to champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158 in March. The former Strikeforce champion stated after the fight that he was retiring from the sport.

Machida was last seen in the octagon ten days ago when he lost a controversial decision to Phil Davis at UFC 163. The former light heavyweight champion has stated in the past that he would be willing to make the move to the 185 pound division.

It had been rumored in the last few days that Machida would possibly be facing off with Vitor Belfort in November.

“I wanted Machida to fight Vitor Belfort, but Vitor Belfort is his own matchmaker, apparently,” White stated. “He wants to make his own fights.”

Machida and Diaz have never fought at 185 in their respective careers. We will give you an update on if this fight can be agreed too.
