UFC 166: Cain Velasquez Dominates Junior Dos Santos To Retain The UFC Heavyweight Title

The main event had a lot to live up to at UFC 166 as the opening fight to the co-main event delivered. Cain Velasquez put on the show people were expecting from him. Velasquez retained the UFC heavyweight title when he stopped Junior Dos Santos in the fifth round by TKO.

Round 1

The fight starts out with both guys swinging in the middle of the cage and Dos Santos rattled Velasquez. Dos Santos swung wildly with Velasquez trying for a single leg and then Velasquez trying to lock in a guillotine. Dos Santos then hits a shiort right uppercut.

Velasquez presses Dos Santos against the cage with each guy throwing . Each fighter breaks and then Velasquez presses Dos Santos aginst the cage. Dos Santos attempts a leg kick with Velasquez pressing Dos Santos into the cage. After they break Velasquez scores a takedown. Velasquez tries to pass Dos Santos’ guard and takes Dos Santos’ back.

Dos Santos gets to the cage and postures up. Velasquez keeps up the pressure by pressing Dos Santos against the cage landing short punches in the process. Dos Santos spins out and attempts a back spin kick that misses to end the round.

Round 2

Each guy starts with a jab and then a left hook by Dos Santos and then a knee by Velasquez. Velasquez lands a takedown, but Dos Santos gets right up. Velasquez presses Dos Santos into the cage mixing punches and knees. Velasquez lands a left hook and an overhand right and then misses some shots and Velasquez was unsuccessful in a takedown attempt.

Velasquez peppers a double left jab to get Dos Santos into the cage. Velasquez rushes Dos Santos not the cage, wearing out Dos Santos. Dos Santos scores a judo throw and Velasquez gets right up and Velasquez lands a right hand and then another and presses Dos Santos into the cage. Dos Santos’ face is swelling.

Velasquez lands short knees to the charlie horse to both legs. Dos Santos misses an overhand right and then Velasquez presses Dos Santos back into the cage. Velasquez throws a short left hook and Dos Santos lands an elbow with Velasquez nodding at Dos Santos.

Round 3

Dos Santos lands an overhand right and then Velasquez once again presses Dos Santos into the cage landing short right hands. Dos Santos pushes Velasquez off of him, but Velasquez then lands a straight right hand. Velasquez then presses Dos Santos into the cage throwing short right hands and then an uppercut.

Dos Santos then lands another short elbow, but Velasquez walks through anf tries to take Dos Santos down, but was unsuccessful. Both fighters get back into the center of the cage and Dos Santos lands a right cross and a straight right hand. Velasquez lands a left jab and then presses Dos Santos back into the cage, but Dos Santos circles out back to the center of the cage.

Dos Santos tries a front kick, but is blocked by Velasquez, who then tries to take Dos Santos down and was unsuccessful. Dos Santos lands a short right and Velasquez lands a straight right hand as well.

Velasquez lands an overhand right hand on the ear and goes for the kill with ground and pound, but Dos Santos gets up with Velasquez trying for a guillotine choke.

Dos Santos stumbles over and falls down and velasquez throws a couple short left hands and goes for another guillotine, but Dos Santos gets out of it. Velasquez presses Dos Santos into the cage and starts throwing left and right hooks with Dos Santos trying to clinch up Velasquez.

Velasquez lands a right jab with Dos Santos just trying to survive. Velasquez dirty boxes Dos Santos and then throws a right hand and short right uppercut. Velasquez lands another right hand that rocks Dos Santos and lands another straight right hand.

Round 4

The round starts with Dos Santos atteptting a left hook, but misses. Velasquez lands an overhand right that rocks Dos Santos into the cage. Velasquez presses Dos Santos against the cage and starts landing a flurry of left ad right hooks. Velasquez presses Dos Santos again into the cage throwing short knees the charlie horse.

Velasquez keeps throwing knees to the charlie horse and then lands a left jab and Dos Santos barely misses a left hook. Velasquez then foot stomps Dos Santos, but Dos Santos lands a short left elbow. Velasquez again though presses Dos Santos into the cage.

Dos Santos then presses Velasquez off the cage and lands a quick right hand. Dos Santos lands an uppercut, but Velasquez presses forward with Dos Santos into the cage. Velasquez lands a couple short elbows of his own as Velasquez is now bleeding.

Referee Herb Dean calls for a timeout for the doctor to look at Dos Santos’ eye, which is basically swollen shut, but the doctor lets Dos Santos continue. Dos Santos lands a left jab. Velasquez throws a straight right hand hand/ left hook combination. A knee presses Dos Santos against the cage, but Dos Santos comes back with a short left elbow.

Velasquez lands another overhand right pressing Dos Santos against the cage, but Dos Santos lands another short elbow and two left hooks. Velasquez lands a left hook and then presses Dos Santos into the cage and the round ends.

Round 5

The final round starts both guys slugging with Dos Santos landing an uppercut and Velasquez lands a right hand and and then a single leg takedown. Dos Santos attempts a triangle choke, but was unsuccessful and a short moment later gets back to his feet.

Velasquez lands two straight left uppercuts against the cage and then a mixture of four uppercuts and right hands. Velasquez then presses Dos Santos against the cage and lands right hands to the heas and body shots. Dos Santos lands another short elbow.

Velasquez lands another right hand presses Dos Santos against the cage. Dos Santos tries for a guillotine, but Velasquez slips out and Dos Santos lands on his head and covers up. Velasquez lands a shots to the head and referee Herb Dean steps in and ends the fight.

Cain Velasquez defeats Junior Dos Santos by TKO at 3:09 of Round 5 to retain the UFC heavyweight championship.
