WWE will hold the 2013 Slammy Awards tonight on Raw with fans voting on the categories through the WWE App. (Get used to that app, especially if you are going to want to utilize the upcoming WWE Network.)
Here are the categories and predictions for each award:
Superstar of the Year (presenter: Shawn Michaels)
Prediction: With the fans voting, you have to think that Daniel Bryan is almost a certain thing to take home the award. And with Shawn Michaels presenting it, you can see something coming since Bryan was not too thrilled with his trainer for costing him the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell and wasn’t exactly ready to accept an apology the following night on Raw. It could very well be time for a receipt with Bryan catching a Slammy upside the head.
Diva of the Year (presenter: Eve)
The Bella Twins
Prediction: This should be a no-brainer as well and should go to AJ Lee who has easily been the standout Diva this year. The only way she doesn’t get the award is if a bunch of people vote for The Bella Twins based off of the Total Divas but that seems far-fetched. And I’ll then have an OMG moment of my own.
Double-Cross of the Year (presenters: The Shield)
Triple H costs Daniel Bryan the WWE Championship at SummerSlam
Shawn Michaels Superkicks Daniel Bryan at Hell in a Cell
Mark Henry’s “retirement speech” on Raw
Paul Heyman costs CM Punk the Money in the Bank Contract at Money in the Bank
Prediction: I hope everyone remembers how great a performance Mark Henry put on back in June when he decided to announce his retirement, only to hoist up John Cena and drive him down with a World’s Strongest Slam with the audience gasping. Henry’s delivery was incredible as he gave this emotional farewell as tears rolled down his face. He even spoke about his daughter and said that daddy was coming home. Everyone bought in believing it was totally legit. Even Mick Foley thought it was really when he posted this on Twitter:
@realmickfoley: Thank YOU @TheMarkHenry. You are a class act; a great athlete and a great man, Thank you for leaving us with one final great #RAW moment.
Luckily, Henry was just that good and making everyone buy into what looked like a heartfelt goodbye and instead turned into an old-school wrestling angle.
Match of the Year (presenter: Bret Hart)
The Undertaker vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania 29
The Rock vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29
Cody Rhodes & Goldust (w/Dusty Rhodes) vs. Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns (w/Dean Ambrose) with the Rhodes Brothers’ jobs on the line at Battleground
Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar in a Steel Cage Match at Extreme Rules
Prediction: This sure feels light and I know there are some matches that should be included. The two off the top of my head are Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena to headline Summerslam and CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar at that same show. But these are the choices and to me, it has to be The Undertaker vs. CM Punk which was very good and not only kept Taker’s WrestleMania win streak alive but also his streak of great matches at that event.
Insult of the Year (presenter: The Miz)
Stephanie McMahon degrades Big Show on Raw
AJ Lee disses the “Total Divas” cast on Raw
Paul Heyman disowns CM Punk
Zeb Colter offends the Universe
Prediction: Now we’re getting into the lesser awards to help fill time. I would like to see Zeb Colter win here just because, according to this category, he somehow insulted the entire Universe. But I think AJ will win.
“LOL!” Moment of the Year (presenters: The New Age Outlaws)
The Rock Concert at Raw 20th Anniversary
Vickie Guerrero is fired as GM of Raw
Titus O’Neil throws up on JBL, Michael Cole and Zeb Colter on SmackDown
The Great Khali and Jinder Mahal try to charm Santino’s cobra on SmackDown
Prediction: Well, The Rock has to win something right? He is the Great One. Plus, the other segments were just bad. And the last thing I want to see is Titus, or anyone, puking on my TV.
Extreme Moment of the Year (presenter: Mick Foley)
The Shield Triple Powerbombs The Undertaker on SmackDown
Ryback spears John Cena through the LED light board at Extreme Rules
CM Punk exacts vengeance on Paul Heyman at Hell in a Cell
The Wyatts crush Kane at SummerSlam
Prediction: None of these really stand out as being extreme but it’s a different day and age for the WWE. But I guess I’ll go with The Shield powerbombing Taker through the announcers table which really helped put the trio on the map and turn them into major players in the WWE.
Fan Participation of the Year (presenters: The Prime Time Players)
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Let’s go Cena/Cena sucks!
Prediction: If this vote was done a few days after the post-WrestleMania 29 Raw or was only voted on by fans in the UK, Fandango would win hands down. That’s not the case and I think Bryan gets his second award of the night.
Breakout Star of the Year (presenter: John Laurinaitis)
The Wyatt Family
Big E Langston
Fandango (w/Summer Rae)
Prediction: I just think it’s funny that John Laurinaitis is making his return on Raw to present this award. And The Shield will win.
Trending Now (Hashtag of the Year) (presenters: Cody Rhodes & Goldust)
#BelieveInTheShield (The Shield)
#FollowTheBuzzards (The Wyatt Family)
#BestForBusiness (The Authority)
#WeThePeople (The Real Americans)
Prediction: Now we’re really getting to the bottom of the barrel. I’ll just go with The Shield to make it quick as I hope WWE does with some of these categories.
Beard of the Year (presenter: Santino Marella)
The Wyatt Family
Prediction: If we want to be honest about this Zeb Colter should win the award and break out his whip Shoobaby in celebration. But people really seem to like Daniel Bryan so give him his third award.
“THIS IS AWESOME!” Moment of the Year (presenter: Christian)
Dolph Ziggler cashes in his Money in the Bank contract
Daniel Bryan wins the WWE Championship from Randy Orton at Night of Champions
Big Show knocks out Triple H
Kofi Kingston hops on a chair to stave off elimination in the Royal Rumble Match
Prediction: Remember when Dolph Ziggler won the World Heavyweight Championship and the building exploded in excitement? That was the day after WrestleMania 29 and many of us thought it would be his year as finally breaking out and being a main-event player. Fast forward to now and he’s doing three minute jobs on TV. This was still the most awesome segment of these choices despite WWE underutilizing him so badly. And Daniel Bryan winning the WWE Championship from Randy Orton? How about him beating the top star in the company John Cena at Summerslam? Forget about that?
