Rousimar Palhares was set to defend the World Series of Fighting welterweight title against Jon Fitch at WSOF 11 on July 5. It was announced by MMAFighting.com that Palhares had to bow out of the fight due to personal reasons. WSOF then announced the new main event will be Justin Gaehtje vs. Nick Newell for the lightweight title.
WSOF Vice-President Ali Abdel-Aziz also told MMAFighting that the company is trying to get Fitch matched with newcomer Jake Shields, which would serve as the co-main event of the show. Abdel-Aziz stated he is getting a little irritated of fighters bowing out of fights or asking to be released to go to the UFC.
“We’re getting screwed,” Abdel-Aziz stated. “I’m trying to put on a fight card and be nice to fighters, and now they dont want to fight each other. I have to put WSOF first and everyone else second. No more Mr. Nice Guy.
“I’m getting sick of this. If a fighter is not going to respect the promotion, he is going to be shelved for a long time. I will not release anyone to another promotion. Fighters must honor their contracts.”
A location for World Series of Fighting 11 or what time the show has yet to be determined as UFC 175 also takes place that day.
