Bellator 120 Results: Brooks Upsets Chandler To Win Title


People didn’t give Will Brooks a chance to defeat Michael Chandler tonight at Bellator 120 when Eddie Alvarez had to bow out of the fight.

The first round was all Chandler as he controlled the whole opening stanza. Chandler was able to land two takedowns with Brooks not being able to do much, as Chandler was working well from the top.

The second round started with both guys circling each other with Brooks landing some knees and kicks. Chandler was able to secure another takedown and started landing punches on Brooks. The former lightweight champion cage keeps pressing Brooks against the cage, but Brooks gets up. Brooks takes down Chandler and takes his back. Chandler sweeps Brooks and gets back in top position. Chandler lands a few punches to end the round.

The third round starts with a left hook by Chandler. Both guys try for a takedown, but the attempts are stuffed. Brooks lands a takedown, but Chandler gets up. Brooks lands a takedown and has Chandler’s back and gets him in a body triangle. Brooks has full mount and landing ground and pound punches on Chandler and smothers the former champion. Brooks continues to land elbows and Chandler is able to pop out and get the fight to the feet. Brooks gets another takedown and has Chandler’s back, but gets back to his feet. Brooks lands a high kick and then a takedown.

The fourth round starts with Brooks peppering Chandler with jabs. Chandler comes back with a left hook, but Brooks lands a takedown. Brooks then takes Chandler’s back, but Chandler reverses and is in Brooks’ guard. Chandler landing a few shots. After not of activity, the referee stands them up. Both guys are against the cage and Chandler has a hand on the mat and Brooks lands to what is an apparent illegal knee. Referee gives Chandler a few moments to recover. Brooks lands a high kick and then Chandler tries for a takedown, but Brooks takes Chandler’s back for another rear naked choke attempt. Brooks runs out of time and we head to the fifth and final round.

The final round begins with brooks throwing jabs and a high kick. Chandler comes back with a left hook and Brooks tries to counter with a right hand. Chandler drives Brooks into the cage for a takedown and after a few moments, completes the takedown. Brooks gets up fairly quickly and gets Chandler on the ground and lands some forearms. Brooks takes down Chandler and Chandler comes back with his own. Both guys on their knees trading shots. Both guys are up on their feet and Chandler trying a single leg takedown. Both guys standing and Chandler lands a shot that drops Brooks and lands some vicious ground and pound and then attempts a head and arm choke, but Brooks gets out. The fight now goes to the judges.

Will Brooks defeats Michael Chandler by unanimous decision (47-48, 48-47×2) to win the interim Bellator lightweight title.
