Going into the UFC 173 main event with UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao and TJ Dillashaw, the challenger was a nine to one underdog. The challenger proved that odds mean absolutely nothing as TJ Dillashaw defeated Renan Barao by TKO at 2:26 to win the UFC bantamweight title.
The fight was a one sided fight from the beginning as the first round was coming to an end as Dillashaw floored Barao with an overhand right hand and almost stopped the former champion. Barao was able to survive the round.

Dillashaw controlled round two through four as he mixed up his punches and kicks with great lateral movement that kept Barao at bay.
In the fifth and final round, Dillashaw could have ran around the octagon the whole round and still won the fight and the title. The final sequence occurred when Dillashaw landed a high kick and then a straight left hand that sent Barao to the canvas. Dillashaw pounced on Barao with ground and pound punches. Referee Herb Dean had seen enough and stopped the fight.
