Chael Sonnen Announces His Retirement

chaelsonnenretiresIn shocking news, UFC star Chael Sonnen just announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. Sonnen announced his retirement on UFC Tonight, in which he serves as an analyst.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the 37 year-old had failed a random drug test by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that was conducted in May as Sonnen was scheduled to fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 175 on July 5. Sonnen tested positive for the drugs, Anastrozole and Clomiphene.

The three-time UFC title challenger in two different classes will be best known for his trash talk leading up to his first fight with then middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in August 2010. Sonnen had won the first four rounds of the fight until Silva pulled off a hail mary submission victory in the fifth round. That fight made Sonnen a star, set the blueprint for how to sell a fight and made him a pay-per-view draw.

Besides the UFC, Sonnen fought in promotions like the WEC, Pancrase and Bodog Fight. The Oregon native was a former Division I wrestling All-American at the University of Oregon and an Olympic trialist. Sonnen’s final record in MMA is 28-14-1, having a UFC record of 7-7.

As of this time, Sonnen will still do analyst work for Fox Sports 1 and be on UFC Tonight.
