Viacom announced in a press release that Strikeforce founder Scott Coker is the new President of Bellator MMA, beginning immediately. Earlier today, it was announced that founder and CEO, Bjorn Rebney and President Tim Danaher were no longer with the company. Coker will oversee the day to day management of the company and will report to Spike TV President, Kevin Kay.
“We are excited to have Scott Coker lead us in a new direction as we evolve the league format from a tournament-based organization to a more traditional model with big fights,” said Kay.
Coker was the founder and former CEO of Strikeforce, which began in 1985 as a kickboxing league and developed into an MMA league in 2006. In 2011, Coker sold the company to Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC. As part of the deal, Coker was a UFC executive with his contract running out earlier this year.
A conference call to formally introduce Coker will take place at 6 p.m. ET and we will be on the call.
