UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey returns to the octagon next Saturday as she defends her title against Alexis Davis at UFC 175. Regardless if she wins the fight, is Rousey the best female athlete in all of sports?
It was announced this morning that Rousey was nominated for two ESPY awards, “Best Female Athlete” and “Best Fighter.” Also receiving nominations were light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for “Best Fighter” and middleweight champion Chris Weidman for “Biggest Upset”.
Rousey won both of her fights last year defeating Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in February of 2013 and Miesha Tate in December.
This is the third year in a row Jones has been nominated for “Best Fighter”. “Bones” defeated Chael Sonnen and Alexander Gustafsson in 2013. Weidman is nominated for his knockout of former UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in July of last. He will be going up against No. 14 Mercer’s win over No. 3 Duke in the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the University of Connecticut’s winning the tournament as a No. 7 seed.
Jones and Rousey in the “Best Fighter” category will be going up against boxers Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquaio and Andre Ward. In the “Best Female Athlete”, Rousey is up against Maya Moore from the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, Olympic skier Mikaela Shiffrin, and University of Connecticut basketball player Breanna Stewart.
The ESPY’s take place on July 16 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles , airing live on ESPN. Winners will be determined by fan voting on the ESPY Awards’ official website.
