Jon Jones wanted to fight Daniel Cormier first instead of a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson. He will now get his wish.
The UFC announced a short time ago that Gustafsson has suffered a knee injury in training and Daniel Cormier will step in to face light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 178 in September.
Cormier is undefeated in 15 fights last competed at UFC 173 in May when he defeated Dan Henderson. A two-time U.S. Olympian and former standout wrestler at Oklahoma State University, Cormier has long been considered a potential threat to Jones’ reign as 205-pound champion.
Jones, who will be looking to make his eighth straight title defense last fought in April at UFC 172 having defeated Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision.
UFC 178 takes place on Saturday, September 27 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
