More on Santino Arrest
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Brian Fritz   |   Thursday, 01 May 2008

Well, it didn't take long for the gossip sites to pick up on Santino being arrested this morning. TMZ.com has the story and states that "was pulled over after cops witnessed his car drifting back and forth -- he had 'bloodshot, watery and glassy eyes.'". The story goes on to say that Santino, real name Anthony Carelli, failed two field sobriety tests "including one in which he couldn't hold his balance. He told officers he started drinking at midnight, and had three Miller Lights and one Kamikaze." While he tested under the legal limit in the state, he took the test about two hours following his arrest.

For those interested, his mugshot is now online here.

Santino Arrested
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Brian Fritz   |   Thursday, 01 May 2008

ImageNot good news for arguably the funniest guy in the WWE. According to Mike Johnson at PWInsider.com, WWE superstar Santino Marella was arrested just before 3a.m. this morning in Tampa for allegedly driving under the influence. He is being held on $500 bond.

Since wrestlers, especially those in the WWE, are such public figures now, it will be interesting to see how much publicity this gets and if he will be punished. My guess is it will depend on what he allegedly had in his system when he was arrested.

Benoit Phone Messages Released to the Public
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Thursday, 01 May 2008
Atlanta’s WSB-TV has obtained phone messages left on the answering machine of Chris and Nancy Benoit leading up to the family’s tragic murder-suicide last June. Found on the system were the voices of a WWE office employee (who had been attempting to contact Chris during the weekend of the Vengeance Pay-Per-View), a friend of Nancy’s, Paul Pomploni (Nancy’s father), Daniel Benoit, and Chris himself.

Although we are ten months removed from that horrible June 2007 weekend, the messages are both sad and disturbing to hear. However, they may also provide some additional insight regarding the mindset of those involved at the time.

Please visit Channel 2 in Atlanta at this link for the complete story.

UFC releases Joe Doerksen
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Let the UFC cuts continue. MMAonTap.com is reporting that Joe Doerksen has been released following his loss to Jason McDonald at UFC 83. This marks the third time Doerksen has been released by Zuffa. He was dropped previously in August 2004 and then again two years later after a loss to Nate Marquadt. Doerksen managed to gain a seven fight streak to get back into the UFC, but has three consecutive losses in the UFC\WEC didn't help him keep his job.

Doerksen is the latest in a string of expected UFC cuts I reported on Tuesday that have included Jake O'Brien and Kalib Starnes

Is MMA headed to MTV?
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Wednesday, 30 April 2008

MTV tried wrestling when it was hot...egg on the face and trying to live down the horror of Wrestling Society X. Now MTV is apparently getting into the MMA game as well. Five Ounces of Pain that World Fighting Championship, a Florida-based promotion, is slated to have there MAy 30 show on the channel. This was brought up during a interview with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Marcus Jones, who is fighting on the show.

It was then later confirmed by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board that MTV is expected to be involved in the promotion, though the extent is not known. Kit Cope is scheduled to headline the event against Dave Cochran. Cope, ironically, was featured on the MTV documentary series True Life. More info is expected.

It is also interesting to note that MTV is owned by Viacom which also owns Spike TV.

UFC Expected to make Huge Cuts to Roster
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Tuesday, 29 April 2008

It now appears that UFC has become a promotion where you now are literally needing to fight to stay. Dave Meltzer reported Monday on Yahoo Sports that last week's release of Travis Lutter is apparently just the beginning of what is projected to be massive cuts.

The company has around 200 fighters under contract and doesn't run enough events to keep them all. The message UFC tried to send with Lutter, the first winner of The Ultimate Fighter to ever be released, is that if you can't go for an exciting three-round fight they don't need you. The decision has instead been made to cut fighters instead of keeping on contract to avoid the competition getting them.
