EliteXC to fold by weeks end
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Tuesday, 21 October 2008
Another promotion bites the dust in the MMA world this as Elite XC, is set to join the likes of the IFL and Bodog Fight, and shut down operations by the end of this week. Dave Meltzer of Yahoo Sports reported today that after significant financial loses of over $55 million in two years the company can no longer stay afloat, and was in the process of filing for bankruptcy.

Meltzer also reports that a lot of their financial woes come from a bad television deal in it's first year with Showtime, where they lost money on every show, as well as purchasing four promotions and putting money into another (Dream). The deal to purchase Cage Rage reportedly set them back $18 million.

Many fighter's agents have been in contact all day with the UFC, among them current welterweight champion Jake Shields, who would be very welcomed into the promotion. Two fighters not making any kind of negotiations with UFC, arguably EliteXC's top two performers, Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano. Dana White has repeatedly gone on record expressing his distaste for Slice, who gained a reputation off of You Tube street fights. White has also stated that he has no interest in starting up a womens division.
