The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Wednesday, 23 April 2008

It's official, James Irvin will take on Rashad Evans as the main event for the June 7 UFC 85 card. Irvin replaces Chuck Liddell, who was forced out earlier this week with a torn hamstring. MMA Junkie is reporting.

Irvin has won three out of the last four fights - all of them in th UFC. This is also now a match featuring two replacement fighters. As Rashad Evans was the replacement for Liddell's original opponent Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Also annouced on the Monday announcement of Liddell's injury is the possibility of adding a middleweight fight between Chris Leben and Michael Bisbing. This after the UFC promised to improve the card in several ways Probably to help the buy rate on the usually poorly performing England pay-per-views.

Liddell Off UFC 85 with Torn Hamstring
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Brian Fritz   |   Tuesday, 22 April 2008

ImageChuck Liddell is officially out of UFC 85 which he was set to headline against Rashad Evans with a torn hamstring. UFC.com confirmed the injury which had been rumored throughout the day. According to the report, Liddell suffered the torn hammy while training last week. There is no word as to what the main event of the show will be.

UFC has to pull something out of a hat for this show which will take place at the O2 Arena in London with over 10,000 tickets already sold. While the promotion is very popular there, I'm sure that many of those fans already bought tickets to see the Iceman which won't be happening now.

As for Evans, it will be interesting to see if he still fights on the show against a new opponent or waits until this fall for a fight against Liddell once he is healed.

Hughes vs. Serra Possible "In Six to Eight Months"
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Brian Fritz   |   Tuesday, 22 April 2008

ImageI can only imagine how happy Matt Hughes was on Saturday night to see Matt Serra get beaten by Georges St-Pierre. Hughes and Serra were supposed to fight last December but Serra pulled out of the fight with a bad back. Instead, Hughes fought and lost to GSP. But, according to Hughes' personal website, the two could meet in the octagon this year.

"The UFC said that if Serra loses I get him, but I don’t know when that will be. I’m going to guess six to eight months, so I’ve found myself watching my diet and exercising more.”

Even though both are coming off a loss, this is still a money fight and one that I would think would have a lot of people interested. These two men genuinely dislike each other so the lead-up to the fight would be incredible. Hopefully, this gets puts together quickly.

Starnes Cut, "Should Look For a New Line of Work"
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Brian Fritz   |   Monday, 21 April 2008

ImageKalib Starnes put on one of the most dreadful performances in UFC history last Saturday night when he ran away from Nate Quarry for three rounds. Needless to say, he lost the fight, his dignity and now something more.

According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Starnes has been released from his UFC contract and given some harsh words by Dana White:

“He just doesn’t belong in the UFC and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work,” White said Monday.

Ouch. But he is dead on and Starnes definitely deserved to be cut from the UFC. He was so bad in the loss to Quarry that the three ringside judges scored the fight 30-26, 30-27, and a never seen before 30-24 which is simply laughable. I doubt we will ever see him back in the octagon again and his future in MMA, if he even has one, will be on small, local shows.
