Last night's SummerSlam PPV featured John Cena challenging Randy Orton for the WWE Title, World Champion Jeff Hardy defending against CM Punk in a TLC Match, and more. Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio over Dolph Ziggler via pinfall. A great opener, certainly much better than the pair’s previous match at Night of Champions. I was disappointed to see Mysterio retain, but hopefully Ziggler will win the gold in the near future. Montel Vontavious Porter over Jack Swagger via pinfall. MVP won clean in about six minutes using the Playmaker in a letdown of a bout. Unified Tag Team Champions The Big Show and Chris Jericho over Cryme Tyme via Jericho’s pinfall on JTG. The former Y2J capitalized on a Show punch from the outside to gain the victory. Kane over The Great Khali via pinfall. This was basically the dreadful contest everybody was expecting (fearing?). Kane used Ranjin Singh as a distraction to hit a DDT on Khali and get the win. DeGeneration X over Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase via Shawn Michaels’ pinfall on Rhodes. DX were given an extravagant army-themed entrance complete with a tank bringing them to the ring. This was a surprisingly competitive and entertaining match which went approximately twenty minutes. ECW Champion Christian over William Regal via pinfall. Christian hit the Killswitch before Regal was able to take his robe off and pinned the Brit in mere seconds. Post-match, Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Kozlov joined Regal in an attack on Christian. This was easily the biggest disappointment of the entire card for me, as I had been looking forward to the two veterans delivering a terrific bout. WWE Champion Randy Orton over John Cena via pinfall. This was the company’s most overbooked PPV match in recent memory. The bout was restarted twice following an intentional countout and DQ by Orton, only to resume once again when a second referee alerted the first official to The Legend Killer’s use of the ropes during a three-count on Cena. The 12 Rounds star appeared on the verge of capturing the title when he locked Orton in the STF, but a “fan” (developmental wrestler Brett DiBiase, younger brother of Ted Jr., according to PWInsider.com‘s Mike Johnson) entered the ring, causing the match to be halted yet again. Orton eventually managed an RKO and covered Cena to keep the belt.
CM Punk over World Champion Jeff Hardy in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match to win the title. A terrific main event, highlighted by Hardy’s Swanton Bomb on Punk through an announce table delivered from atop a 15-foot ladder. Post-bout, the arena lights went out as Punk stood over a fallen Jeff with the World Championship held above his head. When the power returned, The Undertaker lay in Hardy’s place (which went undetected by most of the viewing audience). The Dead Man sat up and grabbed the new SmackDown kingpin by the throat, delivering a chokeslam to end the show. A cool and creative spot to begin the Punk-’Taker feud.
