Last night's episode of Raw featured three title matches, a Divas battle royal, and more.
Special guest host Dusty Rhodes began the program with an in-ring promo, where he announced that his son Cody would challenge Randy Orton for the WWE Title in the show’s main event. The Dream stated that he would appear in Cody’s corner for the match and also named John Cena as Guest Referee. An angry Orton confronted Rhodes and threatened to once again kick him in the skull. This brought out Cody, who told The Legend Killer that he intended to make the most out of his title opportunity and become the youngest WWE Champion in history.
Beth Phoenix won a battle royal over Alicia Fox, Jillian Hall, Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim, and Rosa Mendes to earn a Divas Title shot later in the show.
Chris Jericho over MVP via pinfall. A nice television match, which Jericho won by hitting the Codebreaker out of nowhere for the three-count.
Hornswoggle over Chavo Guerrero in a Texas Bullrope Match. I can’t believe this stupidity is continuing. Hornswoggle hog-tied Chavo to win the bout (as stipulated by Dusty Rhodes), with Guerrero being forced to wear a cow costume during the match. Evan Bourne arrived to assist the leprechaun afterward, and Hornswoggle delivered his Tadpole Splash on Chavo while wearing the cow mask. I only hope you can stop laughing long enough to read the rest of this report.
Mark Henry over The Big Show via disqualification. This match was essentially what you would expect from a bout between these two, that being a slow-paced and power-oriented contest. Show was DQ’d after he slammed Henry’s face into an exposed turnbuckle.
U.S. Champion Kofi Kingston over Jack Swagger, Carlito, and The Miz in a Fatal Four Way Match via pinfall on Carlito.
Divas Champion Mickie James over Beth Phoenix via pinfall.
WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes ended in a no-contest. Dusty Rhodes took the microphone before the match began and “apologized” to referee John Cena, who was then attacked by the entire Legacy faction. DeGeneration X attempted to make the save for Cena, but they too were beaten down by the heels with help from Dusty. As The Dream celebrated with Orton, Cody, and Ted DiBiase, the Champion suddenly dropped the WWE Hall of Famer with an RKO. A shocked and outraged Cody teased attacking Orton, but instead simply stood in the corner glaring at the Legacy leader as the show concluded. I liked the Dusty turn, but the surprise RKO was pointless unless WWE is either building toward a Cody/Orton feud or breaking both Rhodes and DiBiase away from Legacy.
The show also included a number of backstage vignettes featuring Dusty and DX, where the trio pushed the new Rise and Fall of WCW DVD. Santino Marella wore a mask and reenacted the infamous Shockmaster wall incident from a 1993 Clash of the Champions event, with Arn Anderson providing the voiceover (Ole Anderson was the voice of the original Shockmaster).
