WWE Raw Recap - 9/14/2009

WWE traveled north of the border to Toronto, Ontario for last night's episode of Raw, which included Batista's first match since early summer, Trish Stratus stepping into the ring for a six-person tag team bout, and more.

The show began with the returning Batista coming to the ring and teasing his retirement. However, this was revealed to be a ploy following an interruption by Randy Orton, who found himself clotheslined over the top rope after taunting The Animal. Batista took the microphone and said his real announcement was a transfer to SmackDown, but that guest host Trish Stratus had granted him a No Holds Barred Match against Orton later in the program.

Jack Swagger and The Miz over U.S. Champion Kofi Kingston and Primo via Swagger’s pinfall on Kingston. Miz stole Kofi’s U.S. Title from ringside during this bout.

Alicia Fox over Gail Kim via pinfall to earn a future Divas Championship match.

Shawn Michaels over Ted DiBiase via disqualification following interference by Cody Rhodes. This was a good match, which led to a D-Generation X-Legacy brawl around the arena.

Hornswoggle and Evan Bourne over Carlito and Chavo Guerrero via Hornswoggle’s pinfall on Chavo. Post-match, Guerrero took the mic and admitted defeat to the leprechaun. Horrible for Chavo, but this hopefully signals the merciful end to the Guerrero-Hornswoggle nonsense.

MVP, Mark Henry, and Trish Stratus over The Big Show, Beth Phoenix, and Chris Jericho via Stratus’ pinfall on Phoenix. Trish had originally booked a tag team bout following an earlier backstage altercation with both Beth and Jericho, but later ordered a six-person match when Henry and Show interfered. While it was great to see Stratus in the ring again, I cannot understand the decision to have a full-time top Diva do the job for her.

Batista over Randy Orton via pinfall in a No Holds Barred Match. Orton attempted to flee the contest, but new WWE Champion John Cena arrived and tossed The Legend Killer back into the ring. The Animal capitalized with a Batista Bomb to score the victory.

In addition, two Hell in the Cell Matches were announced for the next PPV featuring Randy Orton challenging John Cena for the WWE Title and DX taking on Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.
