WWE Smackdown Recap - 10/9/2009

The latest edition of Smackdown included Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio, John Morrison against Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship, R-Truth and Matt Hardy against Kane and Drew McIntyre and more.

And we're emanating tonight from beautiful Trenton, New Jersey.

We begin with a video/still pic image recap of the Undertaker vs. CM Punk match from the Hell in the Cell PPV. (Taker wins the title from Punk after nailing the Tombstone Piledriver).

Cut to inside the arena. Please welcome the GM of Smackdown, Mr. Theodore (don't call me peanut-head) Long. Long congratulates Taker on his win at HITC. He then goes on to pimp the Bragging Rights PPV. He tells us that should John Cena lose his title match vs. champion Randy Orton, at the BR PPV, he is more than welcome to come home to Smackdown. This invokes CM Punk's music, and thus his entrance into the arena. JR and Todd notice that he's limping a little. Punk grabs a mic and complains that he has to face Batista tonight in a match just 5 days (2, but who's counting?) removed from the most horrific match of his career. Punk verbally abuses Long then demands a submission match re-match against Taker for the title with Scott Armstrong as the referee and Teddy himself standing ringside. Long tries to cut him off, but "No Chance in Hell" resonates through the arena, thus evoking Vince McMahon's entrance into the arena. He announces that there will be a fatal four way championship match between Taker/Punk/Batista/Mysterio at the BR PPV. Vince then introduces Rey as he makes his way to the ring. The two have a handshake before Rey enters.

Cut to ad break.

The new Star Wars Clone Wars game looks impressive. Leaps and bounds better than that God-awful Force Unleashed game.

Chris Jericho's music plays, and thus compels him to enter. 18 minutes in and we have our first match. Good free-tv quality match. Crowd seems kind of out it. Jericho throws Rey out of the ring. As Todd tosses to... an ad break. (I HATE ad breaks in the middle of a match on a TAPED show!)

Back from break, CJ continues his beat down of Rey Rey, inside and out... setting up the inevitable high-flying come-back by Rey. Jericho tries to rip Rey's mask off... this of course makes Rey come to life! The two continue their back and forth until Rey hits the 619 and splash on CJ. 1-2-3 for the clean win.

Recap from Raw. Cryme Tyme's word up segment. I'm sorry, but I don't understand a word these gentleman are saying. Eve Torres is sexy though.

Cut to ad break... WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE.

Eve Torres vs. Michelle McCool in a pretty formulaic divas match. McCool gets a clean 1-2-3 pin fall win with a nasty looking straight kick the shoulder, which JR (without the benefit of a DVR) calls, her jaw.

Cut to a video/still pic recap pkg of the HITC PPV.

Cut to ad break.

In from ad break, we see Vickie Guerrero and someone named Eric Escobar on Teddy Long's couch. (the NERVE!) Vickie yells at Teddy, and I'm sorry, but I don't understand a word Mr. Escobar is saying.

Cut to ring. Hey! There's an Intercontinental Championship match tonight! John Morrison enters. Champion first because tradition sucks. As Dolph Ziggler enters, JR cautions that this is a bold move by Morrison.

Cut to ad break... WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!

Back from ad break, we have a title match.. the graphic told me so. Is it just me, or when DZ's hair dries off during the match, doesn't he look a LOT like Mr. Perfect? Is this done on purpose? During the match, Maria enters ringside, she grabs a chair and sits on it. (lucky chair). The match itself is very serviceable. Lots of near falls and hot spots. Morrison needs to be a main eventer SOON... I think his time has come. DZ also appears to have the right stuff to be around for a while. (I still have a hard time NOT calling him Nicky though). Endgame: DZ sets up Maria's previously abandoned chair for nefarious purposes right outside the ring. Maria, unaware of her beau's intentions, retrieves said chair and sits back down on it. As DZ reaches for the chair that isn't there... JM recovers and nails him with a pretty impressive looking kick off the ropes. (I'm sure it has a name, the announcers don't mention it by name, so neither will I). Morrison with a clean 1-2-3 pin for the win.

JR tosses to a very special look at the 7 Undertaker championships. Down goes Hogan. Down goes Sid. Down goes Austin. Down goes Hogan (again). Down goes Batista. Down goes Edge (I was there). Down goes Punk. The voice over lady tells me, apparently I need saving.

Cut to ad break... WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!

Back from ad break, Dolph and Maria are backstage arguing... and breaking up... Maria attempts to cry. In the locker room, Batista and Rey shake hands and hug. A LOT!

Cut to R Truth entering the arena, rapping. WHAT'S UP? I'm sure I don't know. In the ring, Tony Chimel and the referee look extremely confused. Matt Hardy's music plays, thus invoking him to enter the ringside area. Is he a face this week? I can't keep track of it any more. Announcers inform us that it will be a tag team match, but as we cut to an ad break, JR keeps us guessing as to the identity of their opponents.

As we return, we learn that their opponents will be Drew McIntyre and Kane. Typical mid-card, 4 guys who never tag together, type match here. The heels win with DM's sick double underhook DDT on Hardy. 1-2-3 clean win.

Cut to post-match ad break. A few quick questions for you, dear reader... Why is the next PPV called Bragging Rights, when the two title main event matches don't feature any inter-brand talent? Shouldn't they mix it up a bit? And what about the ECW brand? Did the WWE just forget about them all together? I'm hoping that this will all be cleared up as the weeks progress leading up to the PPV.

Back from ad break, The Undertaker enters the ring to a slew of Jim Ross platitudes. He cuts a promo on his three opponents in the fatal four way match at the BR PPV.

Cut to ad break.

Back from break, Batista's music plays, thus drawing him to the ring. CM Punk's music plays, thus prompting him to the ring.During the match, Punk retreats outside the ring, and we go to an ad break......... in the middle of the match.... on a taped show..... woof..Good slow-pace back and forth match. No crowd noise whatsoever. I actually hear the two wrestlers calling spots, and the ref giving time cues. Incredibly LAME finish as Batista got counted out. Post-match Batista Batista-bombs Punk.

Cue the losers music.
