This New Year’s Day episode of Smackdown features a Beat the Clock Challenge Tournament to determine the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight title. Also, Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre takes on John Morrison in a title match. All this, plus a whole lot more.

Tonight we emanate from beautiful East Rutherford, New Jersey.

We begin with CM Punk cutting an in-ring promo about resolutions. He promises to save a soul in every city Smackdown travels to. He promises to win the Beat the Clock Tournament tonight, and go on to the Royal Rumble and win the World title from The Undertaker.

CM Punk w/ Luke Gallows vs. Matt Hardy in a Beat the Clock Tournament match.
Very slow paced match, which is odd, because the quicker you win, the better. Punk gets in the majority of the offense. Endgame: Punk nails Hardy with the GTS for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, CM Punk. His winning time is 7:20. Post-match, Gallows and Punk continue the beat-down on a fallen Hardy.

Kane vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Beat the Clock Tournament match.
Despite Ziggler putting Kane in a sleeper with about a minute left, Kane still didn’t tap. No winner declared. Post-match, Ziggler hits Kane with the Zig-Zag.

The Great Khali vs. The Carolina Panther (who?).
No lie, there’s a guy in the ring wearing a Carolina Panthers jersey. Khali makes short work of him. Endgame: Khali drops Panther with a Punjabi Bomb for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, Great Khali.

Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre vs. John Morrison in a title match.
Early in the match, Morrison’s leg gets caught between the bottom and middle ropes, and he’s left dangling outside the ring, upside down. Drew takes advantage by kicking him in the knee and gut. He continues to focus on the injured knee, but Morrison does his best to get back into it. Endgame: McIntyre pushes Morrison into the ref, who thinks Morrison pushed him on purpose, and he DQ’s John. Your winner as a result of a disqualification, and still Intercontinental Champion, Drew McIntyre.

Beth Phoenix vs. Mickie James in a Divas Match.
Michelle McCool and Layla are sitting ringside. Beth doesn’t seem interested. Endgame: McCool gets involved and accidentally kicks Beth in the head. James rolls up Beth for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, Mickie James. Post match, Layla and Michelle administer a beat-down on Mickie, and Beth makes the save. After Mickie and Beth clear the ring, they awkwardly slap a low-5. Just as Beth goes to leave, James turns her back on Phoenix, who drops her with a Glam-Slam.

Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio in a Beat the Clock Tournament match.
Pre-match, Jericho cuts an in-ring promo. He promises to become the omnipotent epicenter of the WWE universe. Ok then. Rey gets his usual high-flying offense, even trying a 619 until Jericho reverses it with a Lucha Libre backdrop. Endgame: Rey tries a hip-hop drop, but Jericho catches him, and drops him with the Codebreaker. He pins Rey, who kicks out. As Chris is arguing with the ref, Rey rolls him for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, Rey Mysterio. He beats CM Punk’s time by one second.

R Truth vs. Batista in a Beat the Clock Tournament match.
Rey Mysterio is sitting ringside, just watching. Truth does his best against the big man, but it’s just a matter of time before Batista beats him, right? Close. Endgame: Batista is showboating when he nails the Batista-Bomb. As he’s pinning Truth with 7 seconds left, Rey pulls the ref out of the ring and the clock counts down to zero. Batista didn’t beat the clock, so the new #1 contender is Rey Mysterio, right? Wrong! As Rey is celebrating on the ramp, he is interrupted by Vickie Guerrero. Because Rey cheated, she makes a #1 Contender match for next week, Rey Mysterio vs. Batista.

Fade to black, good night from East Rutherford.
