This Royal Rumble PPV go home episode of Smackdown features one on one matches between HHH and CM Punk, and Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels. Also, Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre takes on John Morrison in a no disqualification match for the title. All this, plus a whole lot more.
Tonight we emanate from beautiful Cincinnati, Ohio.
We begin with DX attempting to cut an in-ring promo. They get interrupted by Rey Mysterio. He feels HBK doesn’t respect him because Shawn keeps saying that The Undertaker will beat Rey at the Rumble. HHH cuts him off and tells him that Hornswoggle isn’t here this week, so run along. Rey tells them that at the Rumble, he’s going to do something that neither of them could do at Wrestlemania, beat The Undertaker. He says that if there’s a problem, they can solve it tonight. They get interrupted by The Straight Edge Society, CM Punk, Gallows and Serena. HHH and Punk have a good back and forth about Punk’s hygiene. They get interrupted by Teddy Long. He changes things up, and says that instead of the scheduled Punk/Gallows vs. DX title match tonight, Rey will face Shawn, and Punk will face HHH.
CM Punk vs. HHH.
Very interesting match between these two. The SES is ringside, providing the necessary distractions. At one point, CM Punk appears to kick a tooth out of HHH’s mouth. HHH even slaps on a figure-four. Endgame: HHH attempts a Pedigree on Punk, but Serena jumps on his back, in full view of the ref, who rings the bell. Your winner as a result of a disqualification, HHH. Post-match, Gallows and Punk punch and kick HHH down until Gallows brandishes the clippers. HBK makes the save.
Chris Jericho vs. R Truth.
Impressive stuff from both guys. Truth looks he could be getting a push very soon. Endgame: Jericho attempts a Code-Breaker near the ropes, but Truth holds on and rolls up Jericho for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, R Truth!
Backstage, Matthews interviews Batista. He says all he did last week was make a statement. And that was that he is going to win the Royal Rumble, and anybody that gets in his way, they’re going to get hurt.
Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre vs. John Morrison in a No DQ match for the title.
Pre-match, Morrison cuts an in-ring promo. He runs down McIntyre and says that if he wants to keep his title, he’s going to have to fight for it like everyone else. During the match, both guys use a kendo stick, and Morrison hip tosses McIntyre onto the ring steps. Morrison’s attempt of Starship Pain is blocked when McIntyre lifts his knees. Endgame: McIntyre drops Morrison with the Future Shock DDT onto the title belt for the 1-2-3. Your winner as a result of a pinfall, Drew McIntyre.
Michelle McCool cuts an in-ring promo. She calls Mickie James, Piggy James. She replays the video of her and Mickie’s encounter last week, and calls out any Diva in the back to a title match. Mickie’s music plays, and out comes…..Layla in a fat suit and a pig nose. HILARIOUS! (PLEASE WWE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! STOP THIS!!!)
Backstage, HBK and Batista share a moment. Dave warns Shawn to stay out of his face at the Rumble. HHH interrupts them. He asks Dave if he has something to say to him. Dave retreats.
Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels.
These two put on a show that you would expect from them. High-spots and near falls galore. In an awkward spot, Rey tries a top rope maneuver and Shawn slaps his foot away. Rey gets turned upside with one foot caught under the top rope, Tree of Woe style. HBK tries to capitalize by putting him in a modified figure-four. Rey escapes by using the ropes. In a “Holy Crap!” moment, Rey hits the 619 on HBK. He tries to drop the dime, but Shawn nails him with Sweet Chin Music in mid-air! Endgame: Batista enters the ring and spears HBK, and drops Rey with a spine buster. Your winner, ????? HHH enters and those two trade blows until HHH clotheslines Dave and himself over the top rope. As Rey and Shawn try to get to their feet, we hear the gong of The Undertaker, and the lights go out. He is standing over Rey and Shawn and gives them each a Chokeslam….at the same time!
