That's the news coming from MMA Junkie after speaking with O'Brien's manager Ken Pavia.
"Yes, you could say we were surprised by the UFC's decision," Pavia said." O'Brien had been battling serious back issues for 14 months before returning to action in March where he lost to Andrei Arlovski. Pavia revealed that O'Brien had recently signed a new deal with the company and had two fights remaining on his contract. The report goes on to say that O'Brien has already signed a two-fight deal with Palace Fighting Championships and hopes to return to the UFC at some point. This seems to be a situation where not having an exciting style really came back to bit O'Brien hard. Yes, he won some fights in the UFC. But the bottom line for the company is putting on thrilling fights and that is something that O'Brien simply was not doing.
