WWE Smackdown Recap - 4/25/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Saturday, 26 April 2008
WWE delivered their final go-home broadcast before this Sunday's Backlash PPV, as Smackdown took the air last night featuring a World Title match, U.S. Champion MVP confronting his number-one challenger Matt Hardy, and more.

The show opened with an announcement from General Manager Vicki Guerrero, who stated that the Undertaker-Batista World Title main event would now be contested under no-disqualification rules. CM Punk arrived and proceeded to engage in a war of words with Edge, prompting Vicki to sign a match between the two for later in the evening. The Rated R Superstar went on to defeat Punk in what was an exciting and competitive bout following a distraction by Zack Ryder, but the loss only appeared to continue the Money in the Bank winner’s slide down the WWE ladder.

Matt Hardy was surprisingly brought out for the sole purpose of delivering an in-ring promo (You would almost think he has a DVD coming out or something ...), which was interrupted by his opponent this Sunday, U.S. Champion MVP. Following Matt’s vow to become the new United States Titleholder at Backlash, MVP kicked the Hardy Boy in his formerly injured knee and nailed him in the head with the U.S. belt before arrogantly returning to the back.

The Undertaker and Batista closed the program with their no-disqualification World Title match. The year-long rivals battled furiously over the gold until ‘Taker brought the steel ring steps inside and attempted a Tombstone piledriver onto the stairs. Batista countered the move and delivered a spinebuster instead, but as The Animal positioned ’Taker for a Batista Bomb, Shawn Michaels hit the ring and superkicked his Backlash opponent, allowing The Dead Man to recover and drive the challenger’s head into the mat with a Tombstone to retain the strap.

Match Results: Shannon Moore over The Miz via pinfall … Natalya Neidhart over Cherry via submission … Edge over CM Punk via pinfall … Vladimir Kozlov over Marty Garner via pinfall … World Champion The Undertaker over Batista via pinfall in a no-DQ match following interference from Shawn Michaels.
