Last night's Backlash Pay-Per-View was an eventful evening of wrestling action, as Matt Hardy took the U.S. Title from MVP, Shawn Michaels squared off against Batista, and Raw crowned a new WWE World Champion.
MVP began the event by defending his United States Title against longtime rival Matt Hardy. Matt went back and forth with the Champion and at one point managed to connect with a Side Effect from the second turnbuckle. With Hardy on the mat, MVP targeted his challenger with a big boot, but Matt dodged the U.S. kingpin and hit the Twist of Fate for the win and the belt.
Shawn Michaels defeated Batista in their highly anticipated Backlash encounter after scoring with Sweet Chin Music. The Animal had lifted HBK up for his patented Batista Bomb, but Shawn slipped out of the move and landed feet-first on the mat, apparently injuring his knee in the process. As special referee Chris Jericho prevented Batista from capitalizing on his opponent’s weakened state, Michaels used the distraction to nail the former Evolution member with his finisher to get the win. Shawn was assisted from the ring by Jericho, Jack Doan, and Marty Elias following his victory.
Edge challenged The Undertaker for the World Championship in a rematch from WrestleMania. The Rated R Superstar appeared well on his way to recapturing the strap following interference from Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, and Vicki Guerrero until ’Taker reversed Edge’s sunset flip attempt into a Gogoplata submission. The challenger resisted tapping out before eventually surrendering to The Dead Man’s clutch. ‘Taker continued to apply the hold for about another full minute before releasing Edge, and Vicki was forced to watch while her fiancee was taken from the ring on a stretcher.
WWE Champion Randy Orton put his title on the line in a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match also involving John Cena, John Bradshaw Layfield, and Triple H. JBL was the first wrestler gone following an FU from Cena, but the Doctor of Thugonomics soon joined Layfield on the loser’s side of the bout when Orton kicked him in the head immediately after the referee finished his count. This left Triple H and The Legend Killer to battle it out, with Hunter emerging from the fray as the new WWE Champion following a Pedigree on Orton.
