TNA Impact Recap - 5/01/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Friday, 02 May 2008
Tag team wrestling was the theme of last night's edition of Impact, as the Deuces Wild Tournament qualifying continued and World Champion Samoa Joe joined Kurt Angle against Scott Steiner and Petey Williams in the main event.

AJ Styles was forced to choose a substitute partner for the Deuces Wild Tourney, as the company claimed Tomko had been injured in Japan during an MMA fight. Styles spent much of the program backstage in a desperate attempt to find a teammate until finally discovering the perfect partner.

Okay, let’s play a little game. To begin - if it doesn’t give you too much of a headache - think back two weeks to the three-way match where the Tag belts were originally vacated. You may recall that it was AJ Styles who took the fall in that bout, as he was pinned by none other than Super Eric. With that said, who would you consider to be the most idiotic, illogical choice as Styles’ partner? I’ll bet your answer is “Super Eric“.

If it comes as a surprise when I tell you that is exactly who AJ ended up teaming with, you obviously don’t watch much TNA wrestling.

Anyway, Styles and Eric went on to defeat The Rock ‘N Rave Infection to qualify for the Deuces Wild tourney. So, not only is the angle itself completely nonsensical, but AJ - in addition to being portrayed as a fool - continues his position as (predominantly) a comedy character. Wonderful.

TNA Champion Samoa Joe teamed with his upcoming PPV opponent Kurt Angle against X Division Titleholder Petey Williams and the final element of Sacrifice’s there-way main event, Scott Steiner. Angle turned on Joe after The Samoan Submission Machine refused to tag him, but despite his partner’s betrayal, Joe managed to deliver the Muscle Buster to Williams and get the pin.

Jim Cornette announced the singles wrestlers - whom he dubbed “The Egotistical Eight” -- chosen to compete in the Deuces Wild Tournament, as Sting, Booker T, James Storm, Kip James, Robert Roode, Matt Morgan, and BG James were introduced. Cornette then revealed Knockout Champion Awesome Kong as the final DW participant. I realize that Kong is a great worker, but I have to wonder how many fans will be able to take her seriously as a competitor when she is mixed in with the male wrestlers.

In other news, Hector Guerrero agreed to manage LAX - who also qualified for Deuces Wild - at Sacrifice and TNA announced a new concept match for the PPV called TerrorDome, which appears similar to WWE’s Elimination Chamber event. A thirty-feet high steel structure will enclose the ring, with the first wrestler able to escape through a small opening at the top of the cage being declared the victor. It was also mentioned that the structure is capable of containing a great white shark (I have no idea if that was meant as a tease of some kind).

Match Results: The Motor City Machineguns wrestled to a no-contest with Shark Boy and Curry Man following interference from Scott Steiner and Petey Williams … LAX over Kaz and Eric Young via Homicide’s pinfall on Young in a Deuces Wild qualifier … ODB and Gail Kim over Velvet Sky and Angelina Love via ODB’s pinfall on Sky … AJ Styles and Super Eric over The Rock ’N Rave Infection via Eric’s pinfall on Jimmy Rave in a Deuces Wild qualifier … Cheerleader Melissa over Daisy Haze via pinfall … TNA World Champion Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle over X Division Champion Petey Williams and Scott Steiner via Joe’s pinfall on Williams.

I wonder if the Russo booking committee writes the TV, thinking about the critique his off the wall shows will get. He has to read these reviews and laugh.
