WWE presented an action-packed One Night Stand PPV last night, featuring a card of gimmick matches highlighted by two World Championship showdowns. The first title defense of the evening featured WWE Champion Triple H placing his belt on the line against Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing Match. This bout was flowing very nicely until Orton suffered a legitimate injury (since confirmed by Dave Meltzer to be a broken left collarbone) when Hunter countered an RKO attempt by tossing The Legend Killer over the top rope to the arena floor. Orton took a very ugly fall and landed directly on his side. The finish was obviously called early, as Triple H used a sledgehammer to put his challenger down for the ten-count shortly thereafter. The bulge in Orton’s left shoulder was very visible as he walked back to the dressing room following the contest. Edge and The Undertaker did battle in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match over the vacant World Championship. Members of La Familia intervened on The Rated R Superstar’s behalf - with Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder both taking nasty table bumps on the outside - allowing Edge to recover from The Dead Man’s offense and retrieve the Smackdown gold (seemingly verifying rumors of an Undertaker sabbatical). This was a great match, but the retirement stipulation was unnecessary and a poor way to explain ‘Taker’s impending absence. Batista dominated and defeated Shawn Michaels in a Stretcher Match. Chris Jericho appeared on two different occasions during this contest to encourage Michaels and prevent The Animal from pushing HBK over the finish line. Batista finally ended the match by delivering a spinebuster on the steel ring stairs and easily whisked a stretcher-bound Michaels over the marker. Jeff Hardy took on Umaga in a wild Falls Count Anywhere Match. Both men battled throughout the arena until making their way to the outside parking lot, where Hardy eventually pinned The Samoan Bulldozer following a Swanton Bomb delivered from atop an eighteen-wheeler. I thought this was an excellent show overall. There wasn’t a bad match on the entire card, although Randy Orton’s injury was certainly unfortunate. Hopefully he will not miss too much action.
Match Results: Jeff Hardy over Umaga via pinfall in a Falls Count Anywhere Match … The Big Show over Tommy Dreamer, CM Punk, Chavo Guerrero, and John Morrison in a Singapore Cane Match via a pinfall on Dreamer … John Cena over JBL in a First Blood Match … Beth Phoenix over Melina in an I Quit Match … Batista over Shawn Michaels in a Stretcher Match … WWE Champion Triple H over Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing Match … Edge over The Undertaker in a TLC Match to win the vacant World Title.
