With all the controversy surrounding many aspects of Kimbo Slice’s fight against James Thompson I found Bas Rutten’s commentary on the fight to be a good read. In addition to being an MMA legend Bas is also Kimbo’s trainer, which makes some of his opinions seem refreshingly honest. Click “Read More” for some of the highlights.
On whether the fight should have been stopped while Kimbo was trapped and taking numerous shots to the head at the end of the second round: “I say YES because those are the rules, it should have been stopped because Kimbo didn't do anything to improve his situation. But I think what made the ref NOT do it was the fact that Kimbo was giving his thumbs up the whole time to let the referee know that he was OK.” On whether the fight stoppage was too early in the third round: “Was it too soon? I thought it would be great to see a few more shots just so that he was down for real. But I guess the referee had the two or three times that Thompson was hurt in the earlier rounds in his head” Bas also noted some of the positive things he saw in Kimbo’s performance: “Did he make mistakes? Of course, but than again, everybody makes mistakes plus he’s training MMA for only a year. I think that he had a few really good escapes from the bottom…So I have to say that I am very happy with this fight and his performance and that this fight made him WAY stronger for next time. When you get caught in training by something, whether it’s a submission or strike, you learn from that, but there is nothing like learning it the hard way in a fight.”

Posted by: NIck at 06-04-2008 15:57 If thompson would have knocked Kimbo out, they would have stunned gun Thompson, then stood Kimbo up and called Kimbo the winner.... also, for the record, one of the impartial judges, called the second round for Kimbo... EliteXC is garbage.... Posted by: Joe Gr at 06-04-2008 17:52 There was no "working" of that fight. Kimbo was down getting beaten up but was not knocked out or unable to defend himself do to injury. If the ref sees Kimbo giving a thumbs up, then obviously he's OK. As for the stoppage. The ref made the right call. YeS He Did !! Jake's ear exploded and mad blood was coming out. Kimbo continued to punch him with open direct shots to Jakes face backing him up to the cage. From there, Jake got hit with at least THREE full force shots that waved him and his arms went down. When a fighter gets waved, it's the same thing as getting knocked out. The only difference is they don't fall down because the cage holds them up. I think Kimbo sux and should have lost. But the match was in NO Way Fixed ... Write Comment
