WWE presented the post-One Night Stand editon of Smackdown on Friday night, featuring an eight-man tag team main event, Santino Marella taking on Jimmy Kimmel Live's Cousin Sal, and more.
General Manager Vicki Guerrero began the evening by introducing her fiance and new World Champion Edge, who gloated over retiring The Undertaker at One Night Stand. La Familia’s celebration was interrupted by Batista, who reminded the happy couple of his challenge to the winner of Edge and ‘Taker’s TLC Match. Vicki told The Animal that he would have to earn a title opportunity and placed him into an eight-man tag later in the show, saying that Batista and three partners of her choosing would square off against Edge, Chavo Guerrero, Curt Hawkins, and Zack Ryder. Batista - joined by Nunzio, Funaki, and Colin Delaney - went on to defeat La Familia, earning Batista a future chance at the belt.
Talk host Jimmy Kimmel and Roddy Piper accompanied Kimmel show personality Cousin Sal to the ring for his match with Santino Marella. Sal surprised Marella by using an airplane spin and a vertical suplex, but it was the interference of Kimmel which allowed the late-night sidekick to catch Santino with a schoolboy rollup for the upset victory. Wonderful - yet another wrestling outsider (this time a comedic non-athlete) enters the business and defeats a full-time grappler. Not that I’m against WWE using celebrities and working with other television programs to gain publicity, but Sal absolutely did not have to go over here.
Vicki Guerrero announced the creation of a Diva Championship and placed Kelly Kelly, Layla, Natalya, Maryse, Cherry, Michelle McCool, and Victoria in a Golden Dreams Match to determine the first participant in a bout for that title. Natalya retrieved the gold star hung atop a pole to qualify for the finals. Considering that the Women's Title barely means anything over on Raw, does Smackdown really need a female championship of its own?
