WWE Raw Recap - 6/09/2008

The first week of McMahon's Million Dollar Mania on Raw also featured Triple H opposing Jeff Hardy, Shawn Michaels appearing on Chris Jericho's Highlight Reel, and more.

Vince McMahon opened the broadcast by launching the inaugural McMahon Million Dollar Mania contest. Vince proceeded to divide a grand total of one million dollars between eight lucky winners throughout the show (Well, I suppose it was only seven if you take into account the young woman who pocketed a mere two dollars …). Many of the giveaways were accompanied by skits involving WWE wrestlers and Divas such as Maria, Charlie Haas, Trevor Murdoch, and Jillian. WWE.com has devoted a page to the MMDM winners, which can be viewed here.

John Cena squared off against John Bradshaw Layfield in a rematch from One Night Stand (sans the First Blood stipulation). After defeating JBL with a quick small package, Cena went nose-to-nose with guest color commentator Triple H on top of the announce booth. Hunter grabbed his future challenger’s leg and pulled him down onto the table before leaving.

Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho welcomed Shawn Michaels to The Highlight Reel. Y2J pointed out how the fans seem to love Michaels despite his lying and called HBK a “worm” before attacking him. Shawn managed a brief comeback, but was put down with a low blow. Jericho lifted Michaels and sent him crashing head-first through the Jeri-Tron 6000 screen. There was no blood involved here - which I thought weakened the moment - coinciding with the company’s new direction of marketing to a younger demographic.

WWE Champion Triple H clashed with Jeff Hardy in a non-title match. John Cena reciprocated The Game’s earlier gesture when he joined Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler for commentary at ringside. The battle eventually spilled outside, where Hunter hiptossed Hardy over the announce table and onto Cena. The number-one contender retaliated by pulling Hunter off of the apron and to the floor as the referee tended to Jeff inside, costing Triple H the match via countout. As Hunter and Cena teased a showdown, Hardy catapulted over the top rope onto the Night of Champions main eventers before returning to the ring to celebrate. It was nice how the closing moments of this show focused on Hardy rather than treating him as an afterthought next to Cena and Triple H.

Match Results: Mr. Kennedy over Paul Burchill via pinfall … WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James over Beth Phoenix via pinfall in a non-title match … John Cena over JBL via pinfall … Umaga and Snitsky over World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly via Umaga’s pinfall on Rhodes … Cryme Tyme over Santino Marella and Carlito via Shad’s pinfall on Marella … Jeff Hardy over WWE Champion Triple H via countout in a non-title match following interference from John Cena.

No RAW with a Jericho heel turn can be considered the worst ever.

When Vince called the first winner and got "Never Gonna Give You Up", I laughed. That's the first time I've ever seen anyone on TV get Rickrolled.
