Last night's Impact featured the first match in this year's World X Cup Tournament, the continuation of Awesome Kong's Twenty-five Thousand Dollar Challenge, and more.
The 2008 World X Cup kicked off with The Motor City Machineguns (representing Team TNA) defeating Team International’s Tyson Dux and Daivari. Kaz also pinned International member Alex Kozlov in an X Cup Preview Match later in the show.
The format and point system for the tourney was explained also, with Round One featuring tag team matches, Round Two showcasing singles bouts, Round Three consisting of a twelve-man tag match, and Round Four being decided by an Ultimate X Match at Victory Road involving one member from each team. Scores are determined with one point being awarded for a Round One victory, two for a win in the second round, a maximum of three points are earnable in Round Three, and four points will bestowed upon the winner of Ultimate X.
A young woman named “Taylor” was chosen from the audience to oppose Awesome Kong in this week’s Twenty-five Thousand Dollar Challenge. Taylor provided the Knockout Champion with her toughest test to date, escaping two Awesome Bombs before Kong was finally able to secure her finisher. Allowing a no-name competitor so much offense against Kong seems illogical to me, unless TNA plans to use Taylor in the future.
AJ Styles spent most the of the broadcast attacking those who had handed him a beating in recent weeks, namely Kurt Angle and Tomko. However, the man Styles believed to be Angle was actually MMA fighter (and Kurt’s buddy) Frank Trigg. Trigg later confronted Styles following he and Christian Cage’s victory over Team 3D, allowing Kurt to blindside AJ and apply the anklelock.
In other news, Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt brawled at a bar after Dutt claimed that SoCal Val was in love with him, Kevin Nash agreed to a match with Booker T next week during another argument with Samoa Joe, and LAX challenged Robert Roode and Team 3D to a Fan’s Revenge Lumberjack Match at Victory Road, where twelve TNA fans will be chosen to stand outside the ring armed with leather straps and are allowed to whip the wrestlers of their choosing.
This was another solid and enjoyable edition of Impact. As with last week, the in-ring action was very good and TNA has seemingly toned down the silly angles and comedy skits in recent weeks. My only complaint with this show would be that I feel more focus should have been placed on the tournament rather than one official match representing the competition. Hopefully, next week's broadcast will be more tourney-oriented.
