Last night's Impact featured Booker T taking on Kevin Nash in the main event, the continuation of the 2008 World X Cup Tournament, and a well-executed angle involving Christian Cage.
Christian Cage battled Brother Ray, who was DQ’d after blatantly striking Cage with a kendo stick in front of the referee. Post-match, Tomko and Brother Devon brought a glass table to the ring and Ray proceeded to powerbomb Cage through the wood and steel from the second turnbuckle. This was an effective angle, but I felt the concept of glass tables should have been saved for a PPV.
Frank Trigg made his way to the ring and responded to AJ Styles’ inadvertent parking lot assault on him last week by calling The Phenomenal One to the ring for a face-to-face confrontation. Styles complied, but the challenge turned out to be a trap, as Karen Angle - who was staying in AJ’s dressing room for protection against her husband Kurt - was confronted by the Olympian and then attacked by The Beautiful People.
Booker T - who revealed his newly renovated dressing room earlier in the show - opposed Kevin Nash in the main event. TNA Champion Samoa Joe took a seat at ringside and eventually cost his former mentor the match when Booker ducked a superkick intended for him. Nash confronted Joe following the loss and the two were restrained by security as a smiling Booker watched from the aisleway.
In other news, Rey Buchanero and Ultimo Guerrero defeated Naruki Doi and Masato Yoshino to earn Team Mexico one point in the World X Cup Tournament and SoCal Val told Jay Lethal that she wishes to postpone a second wedding (indicating a possible heel turn and alliance with Dutt in the near future).
This was another solid edition of Impact. I have enjoyed the atmosphere of the show over the past few weeks, as a more serious tone has been placed on matches and angles, with less focus on comedy.
