Night of Champions Recap
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Monday, 30 June 2008
Sunday's Night of Champions featured three title changes and two World Championship showdowns ... with one brand leaving the PPV minus a top belt.

Triple H and John Cena closed the show with a solid WWE Title match. I enjoyed the psychology here, as Hunter sold a knee injury after taking a bump to the outside; this created a good story for the rest of the bout, as Cena basically worked heel (which was fitting, considering he heard most of the boos anyway) and continuously attacked The Game’s leg. The finish came when Triple H escaped an F-U and delivered the Pedigree for the pin.

The second Heavyweight Title match featured Edge defending his World Championship against Batista. This was Run-in City, as La Familia appeared at ringside to assist their leader. General Manager Vicki Guerrero left her wheelchair to interrupt the referee’s count on Edge and The Rated R Superstar later pulled the official to the arena floor and punched him. Vicki called for another ref, and Chavo Guerrero emerged from the back wearing a striped shirt. Batista lifted the GM over his head and threw her to the outside onto La Familia. These distractions allowed Edge to nail The Animal with the World Title and cover him for the Chavo-delivered three-count.

Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho placed his belt on the line against surprise challenger Kofi Kingston. Y2J appeared on the verge of retaining when Shawn Michaels appeared at ringside and superkicked Lance Cade. This caused Jericho to turn his attention away from the match long enough for Kofi to recover and surprise the first-ever Undisputed Champion with his Trouble in Paradise finisher to become the new I-C Titleholder.

In other news, Mark Henry won the ECW Championship in a three-way match against The Big Show and Kane, and Cody Rhodes turned on Hardcore Holly to win the World Tag Team Titles with Ted DiBiase Jr.

This was a decent enough show, but nothing exceptional. I was surprised that Raw failed to gain a World Championship and it will be interesting to see how long the company’s flagship program is without a big belt.

I was waiting and waiting for the Crossface, finally it came during the finish. Not a great match, kind of weird, but well put together nontheless.
