Last night's holiday edition of Smackdown featured a Fatal Four Way Match for the U.S. Title, as well as the breakup of WWE's most powerful (on-camera) couple.
The broadcast opened with Montel Vontavious Porter welcoming WWE Champion Triple H to his VIP Lounge. Their discussion was hostile (A side note here is that Hunter alluded to the company’s Wellness Policy suspension standards while mocking MVP’s wrestling gear, saying it may qualify as a "performance enhancer" resulting in "thirty days off") until The Game showed footage of Edge losing the World Title to CM Punk on Raw this week. Hunter and MVP joked about The Rated R Superstar’s championship loss, but Vicki Guerrero crashed the party by announcing that Triple H will defend his belt against Edge at The Great American Bash. Hunter made a second insider reference when he spoke of his admiration for Edge marrying the boss to get ahead in business.
Speaking of Edge, the now former World Champion arrived at the building still enraged over the loss of his strap on Monday night. Following a post-match attack on Festus, the blond Canadian grappler’s irritable mood led to a backstage blowup between he and fiancee Vicki Guerrero, who threw Edge out of her dressing room. The couple had a second confrontation near the end of the show, where Edge told “the love of his life” that their wedding - scheduled to take place on next week’s edition of Smackdown - was off. Vicki responded with a terribly acted fit of hysterics.
U.S. Champion Matt Hardy celebrated the Fourth of July by defending his title against Shelton Benjamin, Mr. Kennedy, and Chavo Guerrero in a Fatal Four Way. This was a very well-worked and entertaining bout, which saw Hardy retain following a Twist of Fate delivered to Benjamin onto Guerrero.
