Last night's Raw featured an in-ring confrontation between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho, a Fatal Four Way to determine CM Punk's opponent at the Great American Bash, and more.
The show began with Smackdown General Manager Vicki Guerrero in the ring demanding that new World Champion CM Punk apologize for his one-sided title victory last week and sending her fiance Edge into nervous breakdown territory. Punk confronted Vicki and taunted her until he received a slap in the face from the scorned GM. As Punk wheeled Vicki out of the ring, John Bradshaw Layfield arrived and challenged the new Raw kingpin to a championship match on the program. Punk declined, saying that JBL already had his shot and lost. John Cena intervened and was soon followed by Batista and Kane, leading to a Fatal Four Way main event being agreed upon (as there is still “nobody in charge” following Vince McMahon’s injuries) to determine who would face Punk at the Great American Bash. That bout was won by Batista, who earned the victory with a spear on Kane. Post-match, The Big Red Machine attacked ringside employees - including announcer Michael Cole - demanding to know if someone was “dead or alive” (Presumably referring to either Vince or Paul Bearer). As Kane lifted Cole for a chokeslam inside the ring, Jerry Lawler rescued his broadcast partner by clipping the former ECW Champion’s leg. However, The King’s valor cost him, as Kane closed the show by attacking Lawler and leaving the Memphis monarch laying in the squared circle.
As for CM Punk, the red brand’s new top dog defeated Snitsky in a non-title match after the gruesome-looking grappler challenged him during a backstage interview. As Punk was speaking, a light came down and narrowly missed coming down on him, possibly indicating a link to the Vince McMahon sabotaged set angle.
Shawn Michaels accepted Chris Jericho’s challenge to a showdown at the PPV. Y2J made his way to the ring accompanied by Lance Cade and called Michaels “stupid” for caring about the fans, saying they won’t take care of his family if he is injured. Shawn said Jericho would never be HBK regardless of his accomplishments, while he himself could retire tomorrow and be remembered forever. The camera cut to commercials as the two went face-to-face immediately following this statement, which was a nice touch and a great way to end the segment.
In other news, John Cena and Cryme Tyme vandalized JBL’s limousine and Paul Burchill attacked Kofi Kingston following the I-C Titleholder’s victory over Charlie Haas.
Match Results: Rey Mysterio over Santino Marella via pinfall … Women’s Champion Mickie James and Kelly Kelly over Layla and Jillian Hall via Kelly’s pinfall on Jillian … World Champion CM Punk over Snitsky via pinfall in a non-title match … Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston over Charlie Haas via pinfall in a non-title match … Batista over John Cena, JBL, and Kane in a Fatal Four Way via pinfall on Kane to earn a title shot against CM Punk at the Great American Bash.
