WWE Raw Recap - 7/14/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Tuesday, 15 July 2008
Last night's Raw featured World Champion CM Punk in action, an impromptu Intercontinental Title match, and more.

The evening began with Shane and Stephanie McMahon once again pleading with the Raw roster to maintain order and unity as their father recovers from the stage collapse of a few weeks ago. From there, the camera immediately cut to the arena, where Shawn Michaels attacked Chris Jericho as Y2J made his way to the ring. The Great American Bash foes continued their brawl backstage and Michaels later confronted Jericho following his victory over Paul London, telling the former Undisputed Champion that the worst is yet to come.

Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston rescued Women’s Titleholder Mickie James from an assault by Katie Lea and Paul Burchill after Mickie defeated the British Diva. Kingston then challenged The Ripper to an I-C Championship match and successfully defended his belt using the Trouble in Paradise spinkick.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan confronted World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, telling the pair that they had a lot of growing up to do. Rhodes and DiBiase responded by telling Duggan that he was the one who needed to begin acting like an adult, citing Hacksaw’s use of the two-by-four and “Hooo” catchphrase trademarks since the 1980s. As the second generation duo made their way up the ramp, John Bradshaw Layfield appeared on the screen and offered them the opportunity to team with him in the main event against John Cena and Cryme Tyme. Rhodes and DiBiase accepted the proposition, but the heel trio found themselves on the losing end of that bout when the referee issued a DQ due to JBL illegally entering the ring. Post-match, Layfield lured Cena into the parking lot, where he hit The Doctor of Thugonomics from behind with a steel pipe, knocking him unconscious. JBL then propped Cena against a vehicle and proceeded to speed toward him in a car. I believe this was intended to be a cliffhanger (regarding whether or not Layfield actually connected with Cena), but WWE.com has since stated that Cena was only “grazed” by the car.

In other news, Beth Phoenix accepted an open challenge from Santino Marella and defeated the former Intercontinental Champion with a roll-up (Further stamping Marella as strictly a comedy act) and Batista delivered a spinebuster to CM Punk after the Raw kingpin shoved The Animal following a countout victory over Kane.

This was a fun edition of Raw. The Cena/JBL car angle was obviously silly, but in all honesty nothing WWE airs on their shows really surprises me anymore.

Match Results: WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James over Katie Lea Burchill via pinfall in a non-title match … Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston over Paul Burchill via pinfall … Beth Phoenix over Santino Marella via pinfall … World Champion CM Punk over Kane via countout in a non-title match … Chris Jericho over Paul London via submission … John Cena and Cryme Tyme over JBL, Cody Rhodes, and Ted DiBiase via disqualification.

WWE is really taking this "anarchy" bit serious. I though for sure they would show Cena roll out of the way from the car. I just hope they don't try to make it look like Cena was so strong he was able to not get killed.

I can suspend my disbelief for just about any angle in the WWE. Attempted murder is not one of them! The character JBL should be arrested on the spot for these actions. This is too over the top for me.

When Vince blew up in the Limo I thought that was Ok because it was over the top. This was too serious, JBL strategicly placed Cena against the other car not once but twice. He wanted to ram the car at full speed against Cena's body. Too over the top for me.

I loved the way that JBL just let those camera men film him while he was in the process of committing a felony and also how none of the cameramen saw fit to go call the police or do anything to try to stop JBL from trying to commit murder.

Some people call WWE a soap opera but its bad soap opera and bad wrestling too; it's neither sports nor is it entertaining.

U know it was a great RAW..until the end with Cena and JBL trying to kill him. Can somebody say Rikishi? I liked how they didnt show Cena actually getting hit, the camera \"conveintly\" wasnt at that angle. Hope y\'all realize Cena rolled out of the way.
