TNA Impact Recap - 7/17/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Friday, 18 July 2008
TNA presented the post-Victory Road episode of Impact last night, featuring a Stretcher Match, an X Division Title bout, and more.

The evening began with Booker T - accompanied by wife Sharmell - coming to the ring in possession of the World Title and declaring himself TNA Champion. However, Jim Cornette arrived and proclaimed Samoa Joe still company kingpin. Cornette also ordered Booker to return the belt and announced a Joe-Booker rematch for Hard Justice. Joe made his way down and told Booker he would allow him to keep the title until the PPV, but warned the former monarch that he was now a target and vowed to reclaim his strap next month. Booker - who for some unexplained reason was granted the options of wrestling a self-appointed opponent in a bout of his choosing - went on to dominate Consequences Creed in a Stretcher Match later in the show. However, Booker was attacked in the parking lot afterward when Joe emerged from an ambulance intended for Creed. Booker was tossed inside the vehicle by Joe and involuntarily transported from the arena. Sharmell attempted to strike Joe with a black baseball bat - a Sting trademark - but The Samoan Submission Machine stopped her and demanded to know where the object came from. Sharmell scurried away as Mike Tenay speculated on the possibility that Sting was sending a message to Joe.

Speaking of The Stinger, Kurt Angle cut a promo welcoming the WCW legend into he and Team 3D’s “fraternity” based on Sting‘s assault on Samoa Joe last Sunday. Kurt also stated that Sting would be in the heel trio’s corner when they square off against Christian Cage, Rhino, and AJ Styles in an elimination Tables Match on next week’s broadcast.

Beer Money Inc. whipped officials and other TNA employees (including the departing Scott D’Amore) with leather belts throughout the program (in retaliation to being strapped by fans at Victory Road) before finally targeting Hector Guerrero, who was working his usual color commentating job. Robert Roode and James Storm proceeded to deliver a solid beating to Guerrero before LAX finally arrived and made the usual and illogical delayed babyface save. It was later announced that The Motor City Machineguns would take on Beer Money next week in a Strap Match.

Matt Morgan quickly disposed of Jimmy Rave before being challenged by Rave’s tag team partner Lance Rock (formerly Lance Hoyt). Morgan easily defeated Rock and was put over very strongly here. This was how The Blueprint should have been presented following the conclusion of last week’s Rough Cuts segments, rather than being placed on the jobbing side of a meaningless six-man tag.

In other news, SoCal Val and Jay Lethal argued when Sonjay Dutt tricked Val into believing that Lethal had struck him with a steel chair (Val had told Lethal earlier that she felt he was being too hard on Dutt) and Velvet Sky earned a Knockout Title shot next week by winning a ten-woman Gauntlet Match.

This was a decent edition of Impact, although the show did contain more backstage silliness than in recent weeks. However, the in-ring action was solid enough to excuse the less enjoyable aspects of the program.

Match Results: X Division Champion Petey Williams over Kaz via pinfall … Matt Morgan over Jimmy Rave via pinfall … Matt Morgan over Lance Rock via pinfall … Velvet Sky won a ten-woman Gauntlet Match via pinfall over Gail Kim to earn a Knockout Title shot next week … Sonjay Dutt over Eric Young and Johnny Devine in a three-way match via pinfall on Young … Booker T over Consequences Creed in a Stretcher Match.
