Previewing WWE Great American Bash
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Sunday, 20 July 2008
WWE presents the Great American Bash PPV tonight, live from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The card appears strong on paper despite the absence of Jeff Hardy, MVP, Mr. Kennedy, and other top to upper mid-card names. Six title matches will be featured, along with a much anticipated Shawn Michaels-Chris Jericho showdown.

The show is expected to be headlined by WWE Champion Triple H defending against unhappy newlywed Edge (Jim Ross even confirmed in his most recent blog that the match’s placement was “close to a lock”). Unfortunately, despite the WrestleMania main event-caliber of this bout, the lack of build and interaction between the participants has left Smackdown with a somewhat anti-climatic top billing. To me, the most interesting aspect here is what impact - if any - Edge’s dejected new wife Vicki Guerrero will have on this match.

Raw represents the GAB main event scene with World Titleholder CM Punk placing his belt on the line against Batista. Few would argue in favor of taking the Championship off of Punk so soon following his title win and I don’t feel that is the plan here. However, despite the new Raw kingpin’s need for a decisive victory in this match, I look for Punk to retain on somewhat of a fluke finish (i.e. quick roll-up, etc.).

Shawn Michaels will also square off against Chris Jericho in a potential show-stealer. These two have been the highlight of Raw for many people in recent months and I expect another quality outing from both men. I see Jericho going over, possibly due to interference by Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy graduate Paul London (stemming from the anti-Michaels motivational speech Y2J delivered to London on Raw this week), planting the seeds for a Jericho/London/Lance Cade heel faction.

Other action pits John Cena taking on JBL in a New York City Parking Lot Brawl and Natalya opposing Michelle McCool to determine the inaugural Smackdown Divas Champion.

Here is the complete lineup for tonight’s Great American Bash PPV:

WWE Champion Triple H vs. Edge for the WWE Title

World Champion CM Punk vs. Batista for the World Title

ECW Champion Mark Henry vs. Tommy Dreamer for the ECW Title

WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz and John Morrison vs. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle vs. Jesse and Festus for the WWE Tag Team Titles

U.S. Champion Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin for the U.S. Title

John Cena vs. JBL in a New York City Parking Lot Brawl

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho

Michelle McCool vs. Natalya for the Divas Championship
