Last night's post-Great American Bash Raw featured a six-man tag team rematch, as well as Batista repeating his PPV effort against CM Punk for the World Championship.
Batista was shown inside the production room at the top of the broadcast watching footage of Kane’s interference during his match against World Champion CM Punk at the previous night’s Great American Bash PPV. From there, The Animal made his way down to the ring and challenged Punk to a rematch for the Heavyweight Title. JBL appeared on the TitanTron and attempted to place himself in charge of the evening’s events (as both Shane and Stephanie McMahon were absent), but was muted by order of Batista. Punk arrived and agreed to defend the title against his GAB challenger in the main event, but that bout (much like their PPV showdown) was marred with interference. Kane attacked Batista before the match began, but was run off by Punk. Batista later appeared to be on the verge of capturing the belt when JBL hit the scene, prompting the former Evolution powerhouse to leave the ring and brawl with Bradshaw. The referee ruled the match a no-contest, once again portraying Punk as a lucky fluke champion. I understand WWE is attempting to present their Raw kingpin as an underdog, but Punk must gain some credibility very soon if fans are to accept him as a legitimate titleholder.
John Cena arrived following the decision and accidentally struck Batista while targeting JBL, leading to a confrontation between the two babyfaces. The pair were restrained by officials, which seemed to tease a Cena-Batista match for SummerSlam. Much like the Edge-Triple H GAB encounter, I feel that bout would be best suited to take place at WrestleMania.
Lance Cade called out Shawn Michaels following his victory over Paul London. When HBK failed to answer, Cade introduced Chris Jericho instead. Y2J claimed to have ended Michaels’ career at the PPV and once again blamed the fans for Shawn’s injuries (a cracked rib and detached retina in his right eye).
Hacksaw Jim Duggan addressed the Raw audience and announced that he was contemplating retirement. Jerry Lawler left the broadcast booth and confronted Duggan, imploring him to reconsider. World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase interrupted, but Rhodes’ disrespect toward Lawler was answered with a slap to the face. The arrogant youngsters then teamed with JBL in a loss to John Cena and Cryme Tyme.
In other news, Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix shared a kiss following Marella’s loss to the returning D-Lo Brown and JBL announced his intention to challenge the World Champion at SummerSlam.
