TNA Impact Recap - 7/31/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Friday, 01 August 2008
Last night's Impact featured Samoa Joe's continuing search for Sting, the possible launch of a new Knockouts heel stable, and more.

Booker T opened the broadcast by promising to give World Champion Samoa Joe a tour of the Six Sides of Steel and said he had invited a friend to assist him. Joe later confronted his Hard Justice challenger inside the cage as Kevin Nash held the door closed to prevent Booker from escaping. Sharmell arrived at ringside and Nash carried her to the back as Joe watched on with a smile. A baseball bat was lowered into the ring and Booker used the object to nail a distracted Joe from behind. The irate Titleholder later searched for Sting high atop the rafters, but the closest he came to locating The Icon was seeing a crow perched on a ledge as the show closed.

Joe wasn’t the only wrestler blindsided within the Six Sides of Steel, as AJ Styles addressed Sting while standing inside the cage and teased calling The Stinger a “coward”. With that, the lights in the arena went out. When the power returned, Kurt Angle appeared behind Styles and proceeded to deliver three Olympic Slams to The Phenomenal One. AJ later challenged Angle to a Last Man Standing Match at Hard Justice.

Kaz announced his retirement from TNA during the second edition of Karen’s Angle. For reasons which were never explained, the cameras continued to roll following the interview and caught Tomko - acting on orders from Kurt Angle - terrorizing Karen before pushing away the camera, leaving his plans for the new talk show host a mystery. Tomko was later laid out by Matt Morgan after being called out by The Blueprint. I’m expecting a Loser Leaves Town Match of some type between the two next week, as Tomko finished his run with TNA at this week’s television tapings.

The Beautiful People main evented the broadcast against Knockout Champion Taylor Wilde and Gail Kim, a bout won by Taylor and Gail when the Titleholder sunset flipped Velvet Sky for the victory. Post-match, Awesome Kong arrived along with Raisha Saed and delivered an Awesome Bomb to both Taylor and Kim. ODB and Roxxi Laveaux ran off the heels while Traci Brooks watched from entrance ramp. I like the idea of a heel Knockout stable, as it has the potential to add intrigue to the entire division if booked properly. If the Brooks appearance was an indication that she will join the Kong/Beautiful People faction to create a four-on-four program against Laveaux, ODB, Kim, and Wilde, that's a great start.

In other news, Beer Money defeated Christian Cage and Rhino to earn a TNA Tag Team Title shot at Hard Justice and The Prince Justice Brotherhood discovered that Sonjay Dutt stole SoCal Val’s wedding ring last week (although in one of those fabulous moments of logic that exists only in the world of TNA, the group decided to wait until next Thursday’s Impact before saving their friend’s engagement).

This was certainly an eventful episode of Impact, although a little too backstage-heavy for my tastes.

TNA Creative has put forth a decent effort toward building anticipation for Sting’s return, even if much of the actual material has been silly. I’m predicting a Kevin Nash heel turn at the PPV to reveal that it was he who collaborated with Booker T against Samoa Joe rather than Sting, leading to a Nash/Booker vs. Sting/Joe program.

Match Results: Beer Money over Christian Cage and Rhino via James Storm’s pinfall on Rhino to earn a World Tag Team Title match at Hard Justice … Curry Man, Shark Boy, and Jay Lethal over The Rock ‘N Rave Infection and Johnny Devine via Lethal’s pinfall on Devine … Consequences Creed over X Division Champion Petey Williams via pinfall in a non-title match … Matt Morgan over Sal Ranallo via pinfall … Knockout Champion Taylor Wilde and Gail Kim over The Beautiful People via Wilde’s pinfall on Velvet Sky.

I missed the first 30 minutes of it last night, so I'll have to watch the tivo version tomorrow. It's better that way, I can fast forward through all the prince brotherhood stuff.

My only question is how often can you watch AJ Styles get beat up by Kurt Angle before it gets boring? It seems like he has been beating AJ up every episode for months now! I'd almost rather watch another John Cena-Triple H match for the 800th time.

The Creed-Williams match was good, and I though Williams' promo was decent too.
