WWE presented the final Raw before this Sunday's SummerSlam PPV last night, featuring a promo segment between World Champion CM Punk and JBL, another World Tag Team Title change, and more.
John Cena called out Batista at the top of the show and the two SummerSlam opponents exchanged words. Cena and The Animal were unable to put their differences aside during a World Tag Team Title defense against former Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase later in the broadcast, allowing the youngsters to capitalize on that tension and regain the belts. Post-match, Cena and Batista brawled as security attempted to separate them.
General Manager Mike Adamle signed Kane to battle Chris Jericho in a SummerSlam match on Raw (Um … yeah). As The Big Red Machine prepared to finish off Jericho with a chokeslam, Adamle - accompanied by a number of security guards - made his way to ringside intent on seizing Kane’s burlap bag. The distraction proved costly, as Jericho took advantage and delivered a Codebreaker to score the victory. Adamle entered the ring afterward and convinced Kane to reveal the contents of the sack, which turned out to be one of Rey Mysterio’s masks. Kane said that the mask’s owner had been scarred and damaged. This angle was completely nonsensical and it seems to me that WWE pulled a swerve here due to the widespread speculation that Kane had been carrying around his old mask.
John Bradshaw Layfield challenged World Champion CM Punk to a drinking contest six days prior to their SummerSlam showdown. Of course, consuming alcohol conflicts with Punk’s straightedge lifestyle and the Raw kingpin instead opted to throw a shot of booze into JBL’s face before using a running kneelift in the corner to lay out his PPV opponent.
In other news, Santino Marella challenged and defeated Women’s Champion Mickie James, while William Regal turned back the efforts of Jamie Noble.
