WWE presents the twenty-first annual SummerSlam Pay-Per-View tonight live from the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The card is clearly focused around two marquee non-title matches, with the WWE and World Championships being regulated to secondary status.
One of those uninspiring Heavyweight Title bouts will pit Raw kingpin CM Punk defending his belt against John Bradshaw Layfield. Punk sorely needs a decisive victory here and I expect him to go over cleanly.
The Great Khali is also scheduled (for some seemingly drug-induced reason) to challenge Triple H for the WWE Title. In the eyes of most fans (mine included), Khali has no business in a PPV World Championship Match, much less on what is arguably the company’s second biggest show of the year. Hopefully, Hunter will retain in dominant fashion (A statement I never thought would come from my mouth or keyboard) and can then move on to more intriguing challengers.
John Cena will oppose Batista in the Raw headliner, while Edge opposes The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell to represent Smackdown’s main event scene. Like most fans, I am disappointed with WWE’s decision to present Cena-Batista tonight rather than building toward a WrestleMania showdown between the two, but I feel the match itself could surprise those who are not expecting much in the ring. Edge and ‘Taker, meanwhile, have maintained an excellent feud since before WrestleMania and The Rated R Superstar’s recent maniacal heel performances on television have been tremendous in developing a story for this match.
In addition, Shawn Michaels is slated to appear live for a major announcement regarding the future of his career (which will likely lead to an in-ring confrontation with Chris Jericho).
Here is the complete lineup for SummerSlam 2008:
Edge vs. The Undertaker in a Hell in the Cell Match
John Cena vs. Batista
Triple H vs. The Great Khali for the WWE Championship
CM Punk vs. JBL for the World Title
Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy for the ECW Championship
MVP vs. Jeff Hardy
Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix vs. Mickie James and Kofi Kingston in a Winner-Take-All Match for the Intercontinental and Women’s Titles
