WWE presented their annual SummerSlam PPV extravaganza last night, featuring a tremendous angle between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho, John Cena taking on Batista in a WrestleMania-caliber match, and The Undertaker squaring off against Edge inside Hell in a Cell.
Not surprisingly, the show was headlined by The Undertaker and Edge squaring off in a Hell in the Cell Match. The two once again produced an excellent bout and made use of weapons such as tables, ladders, chairs, and even a television camera. Edge Speared ‘Taker through the side of the cage door at one point and later caught The Dead Man with the same move from one announce table though another. Undertaker rebounded to win the match using Edge’s very own Con-Chair-To followed by a Tombstone piledriver on The Rated R Superstar. Post-match, ‘Taker returned to the ring and chokeslammed Edge from atop a ladder, which sent him through the canvas. Flames exploded from the hole, signifying that Edge had been “sent to Hell” as the PPV concluded.
Both World Champions retained their respective titles at SummerSlam, as Raw kingpin CM Punk defeated JBL, while WWE Champion Triple H successfully defended against The Great Khali.
Shawn Michaels appeared live to address the severity of his recent eye injuries. With wife Rebecca at his side, Michaels proceeded to announce that he was taking doctors’ advice and retiring from wrestling. This prompted Chris Jericho to make his way down to the ring and demand that Shawn admit he was leaving the business because of him. HBK acknowledged Jericho’s responsibility for his injuries, but stated that Y2J would never be Shawn Michaels. As The Showstopper turned to leave, Jericho threw a punch at him, but Michaels ducked and Rebecca received the blow instead. Jericho initially appeared disturbed by his actions, but showed little remorse as he exchanged hateful glares with Michaels from the entrance ramp. This was an excellent angle and Michaels’ wife took quite a stiff shot from Jericho.
In other news, Batista cleanly defeated John Cena following a Batista Bomb and Beth Phoenix carried Santino Marella (both literally and figuratively) to a victory over I-C Champion Kofi Kingston and Women’s Titleholder Mickie James to claim the belts for Raw’s newest couple.
