WWE Smackdown Recap - 8/29/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Saturday, 30 August 2008
Last night's Smackdown featured a Champion vs. Champion showdown, Jeff Hardy taking on MVP in a SummerSlam rematch, and more.

Smackdown kingpin Triple H headlined the show against U.S. Titleholder Shelton Benjamin in a Champion vs. Champion match. Neither man’s belt was at stake, but that did not prevent the two from working a very solid and entertaining bout. The Great Khali appeared in the aisleway to distract Hunter as The Game was in control of Benjamin, but the multi-time World Champion still managed to avoid a Paydirt attempt and Pedigree The Gold Standard for the win. Post-match, Benjamin clocked Hunter from behind with the U.S. Title and Khali took advantage of the incapacitated King of King’s by delivering a Tree Chokeslam. I assumed that this program had ended at SummerSlam and can only hope a Hunter-Khali feud is not in the main event plans for October‘s No Mercy PPV.

The Undertaker cut an in-ring promo at the top of the broadcast and warned General Manager Vickie Guerrero that he was coming for her soul. This commenced a show-long angle where a petrified Vickie was shown backstage at various times making every effort to avoid The Dead Man. The broadcast concluded with the GM office lights going out and Vickie shrieking hysterically.

Smackdown also featured a pair of debuts, as Ron Killings returned to WWE under the R-Truth moniker following weeks of well-produced vignettes. In addition, developmental talent Brie Bella made her first appearance on the blue brand with an upset victory over veteran Diva Victoria.

In other news, The Big show interrupted a tag team match by laying out WWE Tag Team Champions Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder, as well as their opponents Jesse and Festus. Show took the microphone and expressed his frustration over being excluded from the Unforgiven Scramble qualifying last week, saying that he will never be overlooked again. I feel this segment would have been far more effective had Show not laughed following the attack and during his promo.

Match Results: R-Truth over Kenny Dykstra via pinfall … Maryse and Natalya over Divas Champion Michelle McCool and Maria via Maryse’ pinfall on Maria … Jeff Hardy over MVP via pinfall … WWE Tag Team Champions Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder wrestled Jesse and Festus to a no-contest in a non-title match following interference from The Big Show … Brie Bella over Victoria via pinfall … WWE Champion Triple H over U.S. Champion Shelton Benjamin via pinfall in a non-title match.
