WWE Raw Recap - 9/01/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Tuesday, 02 September 2008
Last night's Unforgiven go-home edition of Raw featured three returns, two battle royals, and the official contract signing for Shawn Michaels' match against Chris Jericho at the PPV.

Randy Orton opened the show by addressing his hometown audience in St. Louis and proceeded to insult each Raw titleholder. This prompted World Champion CM Punk to confront the injured Legend Killer before being joined by fellow Scramble participants Kane, JBL, and Batista. The Animal made a major impact by spearing his PPV opponents and Orton later pushed Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes to reclaim their Tag Team Titles from Cryme Tyme. This coupled with the fact that Orton was the only man to escape a Batista spear in the first segment causes me to wonder if this is foreshadowing for the rumored DiBiase/Rhodes/Orton/Batista Evolution faction.

Both the Raw and ECW brands presented battle royals featuring Scramble participants to push their respective World Title matches on Sunday’s PPV. Mark Henry dominated the extreme event by eliminating all four of his opponents en route to victory, while Kane tossed Raw Champion CM Punk over the top rope to win the red brand’s competition. Post-match, Punk spit water in the face of Randy Orton (who was seated at ringside for the bout) and Rey Mysterio made his return by attacking Kane with a 619 and huracanrana over the crowd guardrail.

Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho officially signed the contract for their unsanctioned match at Unforgiven during the closing segment of the broadcast. As usual, both men were tremendous on the microphone, with Michaels stating that he hopes God will forgive him for his actions on Sunday against the former Y2J. Lance Cade attempted to attack Shawn from behind, but HBK dropped his rival’s sidekick before lunging through the ropes at an escaping Jericho. This caused Michaels to take a very nasty spill on the outside and damage his left triceps (WWE.com has since acknowledged the injury and expects to have more information later today).

In other news, Candice Michelle returned to WWE during a six-Diva tag team match and Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella launched a campaign to surpass the Honky Tonk Man’s record I-C Title run, which he dubbed the “Honk-O-Meter”.

Match Results: Kofi Kingston over Charlie Haas (disguised as John Cena) via pinfall … ECW Champion Mark Henry won a battle royal … Jamie Noble over William Regal via pinfall … Candice Michelle, Mickie James, and Kelly Kelly over Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix, Jillian, and Katie Lea Burchill via Candice’s pinfall on Phoenix … Intercontinental Champion Santino Marella over D-Lo Brown via pinfall in a non-title match … The scheduled match between John Morrison and The Miz vs. Cryme Tyme never officially began, as Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes attacked Cryme Tyme during their entrance and retrieved the World Tag Team Titles … Kane won a battle royal.

Good show. I liked what Orton said bout Santino, dont like Orton but had to agree with him. Actually Orton left the ring just as JBL headed for the ring, Batista wasnt there yet. I like Micheals but man, for his healths sake if hes hurt i wish hed retire, or at the very least take some time off. I as a fan of his I would NEVER ask him to jeopardize his health or future with his family. He owns us nothing.
