It's Official: Couture vs. Lesnar for UFC 91
The News - Mixed Martial Arts  |   Written by Marshall Bowen   |   Wednesday, 03 September 2008
UFC made the announcement today that the MMA world has been waiting for....Randy "The Natural" Couture is coming back to the Octagon. UFC President Dana White made the announcement today that the UFC Hall-of-Famer, and current heavyweight champion, will defend his title in the headlining bout of UFC 91 against Brock Lesnar.

MMAjunkie.com is reporting that Couture, who resigned from the company back in October, has apparently resolved the issues with Dana White that led to his resignation which included his perceptions over pay, the company's inability to sign Fedor Emelianenko and lack on respect from UFC officials. He was planning on sitting out the remainder of his 18 month contract, during which he needed to fight two fights, so he could fight elsewhere. That matter and his employment status have been tangled in the court systems for months. According to White his disputed contract has been scrapped in favor of a new three fight deal, which White claims, "No matter whether Randy wins or loses (the bout with Lesnar), he will still be in the UFC". The choice for Lesnar as an opponent appears to be a issue of timing. As interim champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria and Frank Mir are both scheduled to coach the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter" and fight at the conclusion in December. According to Five Ounces of Pain the choice seems to be motivated by money, as Lesnar and Couture are two largely marketable names to sell the event. It is expected that the winner of this fight will fight the winner of the interim title fight between Mir and Nogueria to unify the titles.

Another, albeit unrelated, change to the pay-per-view is the location will now be in Las Vegas instead of Portland, OR as previously reported. No reason has been given for the location change.
