TNA Impact Recap - 10/9/2008
The News - Wrestling  |   Written by Adam Wilcox   |   Friday, 10 October 2008
TNA presented the go-home edition of Impact last night three days before the company's marquee PPV of the year, Bound For Glory.

Christian Cage opened the show by coming to the ring and addressing his neutrality in the veterans vs. younger generation conflict. Cage suggested that he has no need for any affiliations, prompting both Booker T and AJ Styles to arrive and plead their side’s case to The Instant Classic. Jim Cornette appeared and attempted to resolve the matter by appointing Cage the Special Referee for a match between Styles and Booker later in the program. However, Cornette’s strategy backfired, as Christian officiated the bout impartially and attacked both men after the bell. A frustrated James E. responded by booking Cage, Styles, and Booker into a three-way match at Bound For Glory.

Karen Angle welcomed Mick Foley to her interview segment this week (Mike Tenay later informed viewers that Karen had stepped down from hosting the show to spend more time with her family). Foley addressed his Special Enforcer role in the Jeff Jarrett-Kurt Angle PPV match and spoke about the excitement he feels to be a part of TNA. Foley later cut a promo in the Impact Zone, where he vowed to keep Angle and Jarrett’s allies from interfering in their bout at BFG. Both wrestlers made their way to the ring and Jarrett returned Kurt’s gold medal to him. The Olympian thanked his boss and told the former Double J to relay his apologies to Jarrett’s three daughters, saying that their father wouldn’t be coming home following Bound For Glory. This was a strong segment leading into the PPV, but I would have preferred for Angle to win his medal back from AJ Styles in a match rather than having Jarrett retrieve it for him.

Jim Cornette oversaw the official contract signing for Samoa Joe’s World Title defense against Sting at Bound For Glory. Cornette announced that - at the request of both wrestlers - a clause had been added prohibiting a rematch between the two following the PPV. After penning their names, Joe and Sting each offered final comments before Sunday’s showdown, with the Champion claiming that - despite what Sting may believe - he respects The Icon. Joe headbutted Sting as the number-one contender shook his hand and the BFG main eventers brawled as security attempted to separate them.

In other news, Consequences Creed earned an opportunity to challenge Sheik Abdul Bashir for the X Division Title at Bound For Glory by winning a four-man match over Petey Williams, Jay Lethal, and Sonjay Dutt.

TNA continued to build the PPV’s top two matches well on this go-home broadcast, although I feel the X Division Championship bout and Styles/Booker/Cage three-way could have benefited from more promotion in recent weeks. Nonetheless, Bound For Glory looks to be a strong show and I look forward to the event.

Match Results: Kip James over Rhino via pinfall in a No-disqualification Match following interference by Velvet Sky … Consequences Creed over Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, and Petey Williams via pinfall on Dutt to earn an X Division Title shot at Bound For Glory … Abyss and Matt Morgan over TNA Tag Team Champions Beer Money Inc. in a non-title match via Abyss’ pinfall on James Storm … Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed over Knockout Champion Taylor Wilde and Roxxi via Kong’s pinfall on Roxxi … AJ Styles over Booker T via pinfall (Christian Cage served as Special Referee).
