ESPN.com was first to report the news.
Jones (19-1) is coming off his sixth consecutive defense of his championship — a new UFC record for the light heavyweight division — against Alexander Gustafsson (15-2) in what what his toughest contest to date. Gustafsson will have to wait to get a rematch and will have his next fight early next year in his home country Sweden.
While there was some talk that the Swede would get an automatic rematch, UFC president Dana While said that Jones asked for the fight against No. 1 contender Teixeira (22-2).
“That’s what the champ wants,” White said. “We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
