Dominick Cruz Tears His Groin And Has To Vacate Bantamweight Title, Urijah Faber To Face Renan Barao At UFC 169

cruz

Dominick Cruz cannot a catch a break. UFC President Dana White stated on ESPN’s Sportscenter that Cruz suffered a grade 2 or 3 tear in his groin and is out of his UFC 19 main event fight against Renan Barao.

White stated that the UFC was stripping Cruz of the title and making Barao the undisputed UFC bantamweight champion. Replacing Cruz in the fight at UFC 169 will be Cruz’s long-time nemesis Urijah Faber.

Cruz held the bantamweight title since defeating Brian Bowles in March of 2010 for the WEC title, which was then merged into the UFC title in December of that year. Cruz made two title defenses in the UFC defeating Faber and his last fight against Demetrious Johnson in October of 2011.

“The Dominator” then coached The Ultimate Fighter Live Season with Faber to lead to a fight at UFC 148 in July of 2012 and ended up tearing his ACL in training. Cruz then suffered a another setback in rehab and had to have another ACL surgery with the UFC stating that if he couldn’t be healthy to fight in early 2014 he would be stripped of the title.

Faber has won four fights in a row since losing to Barao at UFC 149 in July of 2012. “The California Kid” last fought at UFC on Fox 9 in December defeating Michael McDonald.

Barao hasn’t lost in 32 fights and defeated Eddie Wineland in his last fight at UFC 165 in September. The UFC has stated that Barao vs Faber will be the main event of the show.

UFC 169 takes place on Saturday, February 1 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Gray Maynard vs Nate Diaz Bumped Up To Headline TUF 18 Finale

nate diaz

The UFC has announced that Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard is the new main event for The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale on November 30 replacing the Demetrious Johnson-Joseph Benavidez flyweight title fight.

The reason Johnson-Benavidez, which was originally scheduled for the TUF 18 was moved to the Fox show was due to UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis had to bow out of his title fight with Josh Thomson due to a knee injury.

This will be the third time that Diaz and Maynard have squared off, but the second time officially as they fought each other when they were on the fifth season of TUF, with Diaz winning by submission. The two battled at UFC Fight Night 20 in January of 2010 with Maynard winning by split decision.

Diaz comes into the fight on a two fight losing streak, defeated by Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson. Maynard is 2-2-1 in his last five fights losing most recently to T.J. Grant by knockout at UFC 160 in May.

Usually main event fights are five rounds, but due to this fight being in 19 days, it will be a three round affair. The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale takes place on Saturday, November 30 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
