robinson

It was reported today by Jack Shannon of Scientific Wrestling that UK legend Billy Robinson has passed away at the age of 74. Shannon made the announcement of Robinson’s passing in a Facebook post.

“I am unbelievably sad to report that my very good friend Billy Robinson passed away today. I hadn’t heard from him in days so I contacted his apartment complex to check in on him. When I called back for a progress report, the apartment manager put the police on the phone. It seems he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was a lion of a man, bigger than life in so many ways. My wife and I named our youngest son Lliam in his honor. You will be sorely missed, my friend. Thank you so much for living the life you did.”

Robinson made his name in England as a submission ace at Wigan school in the early 60s. The UK native became an international star winning the IWE world championship in Japan.

Robinson became known in the United States working for AWA in the 1970′s and had a classic match with Antonio Inoki in 1975. Robinson helped bring along some of pro wrestling’s biggest names like Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Sgt. Slaughter and The Iron Sheik.

First 10 Things You Should Watch on WWE Network

wwe-networkThe big day is almost here, Christmas in February for wrestling fans with the WWE Network set to launch on Monday morning at 9:00a ET.  Over 1,500 hours of video-on-reman will be available immediately including all WWE, WCW and ECW pay-per-views.

If that isn’t enough, WWE will also include all new pay-per-views as well as encores of new episodes of Raw and Smackdown on the new WWE Network as well as other original programming.   Anyone that signs up gets all of that for free for a week and then for $9.99 a month with a six-month commitment.  Yeah, that’s a good deal.

With all of that video-on-demand programming available from there get-go, here are ten things you should watch after signing up for the WWE Network.

WWF Royal Rumble 1992 – Royal Rumble Match

A flamboyant Ric Flair had been talking for weeks about how we has going to become the WWF World Champion after joining the World Wrestling Federation just a few months earlier bragging about how he was the real world champion.  He had a tough road to go, entering the Royal Rumble at number three.  His manager Bobby Heenan was on commentary and nearly passed out every time that Flair was nearly eliminated.  But the Nature Boy survived nearly 60 minutes and in the end was able to push Sid Justice out of the ring with a helping hand from Hulk Hogan who was upset that Justice had taken him out a few seconds earlier.  After the match, Flair, Heenan and Curt Hennig — all wearing the biggest grins ever — bragged about the win with Flair exclaiming, “With a tear in my eye, this is the greatest moment in the history of my life!”  Wooo!

WrestleMania 25 – Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker

Both men had amazing entrances with Michaels decked in all white and he descended from the clouds while The Undertaker ascended from the floor surrounded by flames.  Even more amazing was the match these two would have, a nearly flawless performance by both legends in putting together an all-time classic and arguable the greatest match in WrestleMania history.  The Undertaker was nearly knocked out and could have possibly been permanently injured while performing a suicide dive over the ropes to the floor where Michaels pulled the cameraman in front of him.  The problem was that person was out of position and did not catch the Dead Man who torpedoed down on his head and neck.  Somehow, he was able to continue and after both men kicked our of each other’s finishers and the crowd in a frenzy, Michaels went for a moonsault for Undertaker caught him and went right into a Tombstone Piledriver for the win.

1999 ECW Living Dangerously – Jerry Lynn vs. Rob Van Dam

This was the first encounter between them in what would become the biggest feud in both men’s careers.  Both of them went 110% pulling out moves and countermoves and just crazy amounts of action, coming up with so many brutal yet innovative moves as they battled for the ECW Television Title.  After going to the 20-minute time limit with no winner, referee John Finnegan was ready to award the match to Lynn but he wanted none of that and insisted that they go another five minutes to get a clean winner.   That would backfire as Van Dam would connect on the Five Star Frog Splash a couple minutes later for the win.

WWE Summerslam 2002 – Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H

This was Michaels return to the ring after more than four years and it looked like he hadn’t missed a day.   Just so they could play it safe and have every trick at their disposal, this match was a non-sanctioned street fight.  Michaels wasn’t holding anything back and he even broke out a splash off the top rope sending Triple H through a table on the floor.  In the end, Michaels was able to reverse a Pedigree and roll up Hunter for the win in his big return.

WCW Superbrawl II – Brian Pillman vs. Justin Thunder Liger

An innovative match for its time in 1992 as they put on a display of aerial moves and countermoves against one another for nearly 20 minutes for the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship.  One of the best things WCW ever did was focus on the light heavyweight / cruiserweight division, helping bring in a style that most people in the U.S. had never seen before along with a new crop of stars.  Both of them shined but Pillman never looked better here pulling out the victory.

WWE Summerslam 2011 – CM Punk vs. John Cena

After having some real life contract issues with the company and dropping his infamous ‘pipe bomb” promo on Raw, Punk won the WWE Championship at the Money in the Bank PPV and looked to have left the company with its most prestigious title.  John Cena would later win a new version of the championship but Punk would return to face Cena as they would crown an undisputed champion.  An electric crowd was treated to a classic between the two who have always had tremendous chemistry together.  That would be the case again on this night with them going back and forth before Punk got the win after connecting on his second GTS of the match.

WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 – Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

A fantastic performance that helped further put cruiserweight wrestling on the map in the country.   The crowd was on fire as they showed off everything from some fantastic chain wrestling to high flying action showcasing their unbelievable skills.  Both Guerrero and Mysterio were in the prime of their careers and moving at such an unbelievable pace and working flawlessly in unison.  Mysterio was able to hit a huracanrada for the three count and winning the cruiserweight championship and holding on to his mask in the process.

ECW Heatwave 1998 – Masato Tanaka vs. Mike Awesome

This one is not for anyone squeamish as is turned into one of the more violent matches you have ever seen, going above and beyond with the number of physical power moves and unprotected chair shots that should be a case study for CTE.  Still, Tanaka and Awesome put on quite a display of perseverance and one-upmanship that saw Tanaka finally slay the giant.

WWF Summerslam 1992 – Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog

The WWF took this show across the pond to Wembley Stadium in London with their own British Bulldog challenging Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Championship in the main event.  A masterpiece between the two as they showcased great technical wrestling and an incredible story with Hart using his quickness and the bigger Bulldog focusing on power moves.  Hart tried to close out the match with a sunset flip but Bulldog reversed the move and pinned Hart to win the championship in front of a joyous crowd.

WWF WrestleMania 15 – The Rock vs. Steve Austin

The two biggest stars of the era clashing on the biggest stage with Austin at the popularity of his powers while The Rock was still growing into his.  Remember, The Rock was a heel before becoming the People’s Champion as he representing Mr. McMahon and the Corporation.  It’s great to look back at these two wrestling giants in the primes in this mega-clash.  It also turned out to be a great match as they exchanged finishers in the end with Austin finally landing a Stone Cold Stunner to win the WWF Championship.

Ric Flair Received Death Threats For Doing NFL Pre-Game Speech

flair

Ric Flair made his return to WWE television this past Monday at “Old School Raw” in a segment with Randy Orton and John Cena. Before the appearance though, Flair did a pre-game speech for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers before their wild card playoff game on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The 49ers won the game and now face Flair’s hometown team, the Carolina Panthers this Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

People were wondering who Flair would speak too before the game on Sunday. The answer is no as Flair’s management team sent out a press release that Flair won’t be.

CHARLOTTE, NC – (January 9, 2014) He’s always been the “dirtiest player in the game” – and some things never change.

A long time Carolina Panthers fan, Ric Flair created quite the stir when WWE sent him to Green Bay, WI January 5th to give the San Francisco 49ers an unexpected locker room pep talk. WWE is hosting WrestleMania XXXI in SanFrancisco in 2015. Now many are asking: Will Flair attend the January 12th playoff game in Carolina as they host San Francisco? And if so, which team will he support?

“When the 49ers reached out and WWE asked Ric to jet up there, of course he said yes,” says Melinda Morris Zanoni, Flair’s agent at Legacy Talent and Entertainment, “and he’s friends with a bunch of the 49ers just like he is with the Panthers, Packers, and many other NFL players. But no, Ric does not intend on attending the Panthers vs. 49ers game this weekend.” “What can I say? I’ve always been a very good heel!” added Flair.

The 49er pep talk, which instantly went viral, caused many Carolina fans to voice their feelings of anger and betrayal on social media – some even offering death threats to Flair. “We know fans are passionate about their teams, but some of the choice language we have been receiving is scaring off our interns,” says Melinda.

The AJ Styles Dilemma

styles lone wolf winBelieve it or not, AJ Styles is a big deal. He was the first contracted TNA wrestler to land at #1 on Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s annual PWI 500 list. He’s a five-time (five-time! five-time! five-time! five-time!) World Heavyweight Champion. And he’s the only wrestler to have held every male championship owned and sanction by TNA during the company’s tenure.

On the other hand, your neighbour might bump into him at Wal-Mart and never give him a second glance. [Read more...]

WWE Makes A Major Announcement Regarding WWE 2K14

The WWE and 2K announced today that the new video game WWE 2K14 will now have a feature called 30 Years of WrestleMania, which will be centered around the biggest matches in the history of WrestleMania. One of the big matches will include Hulk Hogan against Andre the Giant from WrestleMania III.

There will be 45 matches included in the new feature including matches like Hogan versus Andre, Hogan versus The Rock from WrestleMania 18 and The Rock versus John Cena from WrestleMania 28.

The new feature will also include recreated arenas, ring entrances of the wrestlers and the graphics used for each match.

Here is a statement WWE issued today regarding the new feature for WWE 2K14:

2K announced the all-new “30 Years of WrestleMania” mode in “WWE 2K14,” the upcoming video game in the award-winning franchise. Details about the exciting new single-player campaign were revealed during a conference call with WWE COO Triple H and 2K Creative Director Cory Ledesma.

Inspired by the landmark WrestleMania XXX, which will emanate from New Orleans on Sunday, April 6, 2014, “30 Years of WrestleMania” will be a nostalgic journey through three decades of WWE history. Utilizing the greatest video game roster ever assembled, “30 Years” will allow players the chance to relive and experience 45 classic WrestleMania matches, including Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III, Hogan vs. The Rock at WrestleMania X8 and The Rock vs. John Cena a tWrestleMania XXVIII.

The inclusion of Hulk Hogan in the game is a particularly exciting announcement, and one the WWE Universe has eagerly anticipated.

In addition to the 45 classic WrestleMania matches, 2K has painstakingly recreated arenas, era-centric graphics and vintage screen effects to provide gamers with the ultimate historically accurate experience.

“WrestleMania creates moments in time that last forever,” WWE’s COO told reporters. “And with our amazing partner, 2K, we can really capture that.”

Also included are exclusive WWE-produced video packages made for the game to refresh the storylines that led to the matches and historical in-game objectives to unlock a treasure trove of rewards such as Superstars, Legends, alternate attire and exclusive photography.

“Knowing where you came from is important to where you’re going to go, and for WrestleMania, it’s important to see these iconic moments,” Triple H said. “We are extremely excited about this concept, as 30 years of WrestleMania is a massive milestone for us.”

“WWE 2K14″ puts gamers in the boots of WWE’s grandest Superstars at the very moments that made them legendary, allowing WWE Universe members the chance to live that big match and participate in that big WrestleMania moment.

Because “WWE 2K14″ is where dream matches happen, WWE.com asked Triple H what his dream match would be. Admitting that it would be hard to choose just one, The Cerebral Assassin said, “I would have loved to go one-on-one with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania, because I consider him to be the greatest in-ring performer of all time, and my best friend.”

Since we are talking dream matchups here, Triple H added, “I’d go back to the early ’80s and wrestle Ric Flair … I’ll go back even further and say Bruno Sammartino and Buddy Rogers. I’m really a history-based guy.”

And, from all accounts, “WWE 2K14″ is shaping up to be a game steeped in history, while bringing the cutting-edge graphics and gameplay the WWE Universe has come to expect from the franchise. Follow Between The Ropes on Facebook and Twitter.

Arrest Warrant Issued for Ric Flair

flairAn arrest order has been issued by a judge in Meckleburg, North Carolina for WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Flair (Richard Fliehr) was held in contempt earlier this month for not paying his estranged wife more than $32,000 in spousal support.

Flair was ordered to pay $4,000 a month to his latest former wife Jacqueline Beems. The money was intended to go for her car payment, health insurance and legal fees.

The court says that Flair owns Beems $32,352.51 and he will avoid jail time if he pays her that amount.
Flair did tell the Observer that he plans on paying his ex-wife by Wednesday.
“The reason I didn’t pay my ex-wife the 32 grand is because my son died and I was in the hospital for a month,” Flair said. “I was in the hospital for a month with a blood clot. I didn’t go to work for three months.”

Beems also has some recent issues with the law as she turned herself in to authorities on Tuesday and was charged with making a harassing phone call to Flair’s current girlfriend Wendy Kidder, better known to wrestling fans as Fifi the Maid.
Beems is accused of making a series of phone calls to Kidder, Flair’s girlfriend and was charged with the misdemeanor. She was released on a $500 unsecured bond.
