Chael Sonnen Signs New UFC Deal, Returning to Middleweight

sonnenChael Sonnen will be fighting for a while longer.

The former two-division contender announced on Fuel TV on Tuesday night that he has agreed to a new five-fight contract with the UFC that will have him return to the middleweight division following his light heavyweight matchup against Mauricio Rua on August 17.

Sonnen also said that he has changed training camps, leaving Team Quest in Portland, Oregon and has joined up with the Reign Training Center in Lake Forest, California where Mark Munoz is the head coach.

The 36-year-old fighter is current training for his about bout against Rua and hoping to end a two-fight losing streak.

Once that is over, he will move back down in weight and has already mentioned two people he would like to face at middleweight.

“There are two guys I want to get matched up with, first there’s Vitor Belfort because he’s awesome. And the second is Wanderlei (Silva), who I’ve just found out is going back to middleweight,” said Sonnen. “The landscape has completely changed. I have a new contract and I’m returning to the weight class.”

Chael Sonnen vs Shogun Rua Set to Headline UFC on Fox Sports 1 1

August is going to one of the busiest months in the history of the UFC.

The UFC will have two pay-per-view events, UFC 163 and UFC 164 at the beginning and end of the month. Then you have the debut of Fox Sports 1 channel debuting on August 17 with the UFC having two shows that month on the channel.

UFC President Dana White promised one heck of a card for UFC on Fox Sports 1. Now we have a headlining fight.

sonnen

That event will take place on Saturday, August 17 from TD Garden in Boston.

The fight came about when Rua ((21-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC) was supposed to square off with Antonio Rogerio Nogueiranext week at UFC 161, but Nogueira had to bow out due to injury. Sonnen (27-13-1 MMA, 6-6 UFC) then stated on Twitter that he would step in and face Rua.

Sonnen though was not able to get the necessary paperwork to be able to compete in Canada for next weekend. The native of Oregon is coming off a loss to UFC lightweight champion Jon Jones in April at UFC 159. Rua is coming off a loss to Alexander Gustafsson in December at UFC on Fox 5.
