UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao vs TJ Dillashaw To Main Event UFC 173

barao

It was announced earlier in the week that UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman’s main event fight against Lyoto Machida at UFC 173 was getting moved to UFC 175 in July. The movement was due to the fact that Weidman was having minor surgery on both of his knees. We now have a new main event for UFC 173.

It was first reported by MMAJunkie.com that Renan Barao will defend his UFC bantamweight championship against TJ Dillashaw. Barao was last seen in the cage last month at UFC 169 when he stopped Urijah Faber and will look to extend his unbeaten streak to 33.

Dillashaw was last seen in the octagon in January defeating Mike Easton by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 35 in January in a fight he thoroughly dominated.

MMAJunkie also reported that the UFC had originally asked Raphael Assuncao to fight Barao, but Assuncao has some lingering injuries that won’t allow him to take the fight.

UFC 173 takes place on Saturday, May 24 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jose Aldo And Renan Barao Retain Their Titles At UFC 169

aldo

Last night’s UFC 169 can be deemed as a night of decisions with the main card going just as expected. In the main event, Renan Barao retained his UFC bantamweight championship by defeating Urijah Faber by first round TKO. In the co-feature Jose Aldo defeated Ricardo Lamas by unanimous decision to retain the UFC featherweight championship.

The main event to a lot of people seemed to end controversially. In what was a back and forth first round, Barao landed a kick and then an overhand hand that sent Faber stumbling and Barao pouncing on Faber, but Faber was able to get back up to his feet. Faber started swinging wildly and then Barao landed an overhanded right that sent Faber face planting. Barao pounced on Faber landing 14 unanswered shots to the side of the head. The champion was looking at referee Herb Dean. Dean told Faber to do something and Faber gave a thumbs and that wasn’t enough him as he stopped the fight.

Aldo made his eighth straight title defense in defeating Lamas last night. The champion controlled the fight from the get go with thunderous outside leg kicks and punch combinations. Lamas was game though as tried to push the pace, but was unable to do so. The challenger had a bright moment in the final round as he had top position on Aldo and landed some good ground and pound, but was unable to finish the fight.

ufc belt

The NFL’s Super Bowl takes place this Sunday at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The game features the AFC champion Denver Broncos battling the NFC champions Seattle Seahawks.

Typically on Tuesday’s during Super Bowl week, media day takes place where all credentialed media comes and asks the players and coaches about the big game.

The UFC is holding their annual Super Bowl card this weekend as UFC 169 takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey headlined by title fights featuring Renan Barao defending his UFC bantamweight championship against Urijah Faber. In the co-feature, Jose Aldo defends the UFC featherweight championship against Ricardo Lamas.

UFC reporter Megan Olivi was attending media day in conjunction with the company interviewing Denver Broncos players and asking them to pose with a UFC title belt. An NFL official by the name of Dennis Kayser, who is the Senior Director of On-Field Operations for the league saw Olivi and a cameraman and asked what she was doing.

Olivi told Kayser, “The UFC title belt, “Want to hold it?”

Kayser told her no and asked them to leave telling Olivi, “We don’t want this around here,”. “This is wrestling stuff, right? Yeah, we don’t want that associated with us and this event. This is the NFL.”

Olivi told Kayser that the UFC is MMA and they are corporate partner with Fox Sports and flagged down Fox Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer to tell Kayser who they are. Kayser listened to what Glazer said and were eventually allowed to stay.

Kayser then told Olivi, “Alright, but only do it with players on the floor. No podiums.”

Dominick Cruz cannot a catch a break. UFC President Dana White stated on ESPN’s Sportscenter that Cruz suffered a grade 2 or 3 tear in his groin and is out of his UFC 19 main event fight against Renan Barao.

White stated that the UFC was stripping Cruz of the title and making Barao the undisputed UFC bantamweight champion. Replacing Cruz in the fight at UFC 169 will be Cruz’s long-time nemesis Urijah Faber.

Cruz held the bantamweight title since defeating Brian Bowles in March of 2010 for the WEC title, which was then merged into the UFC title in December of that year. Cruz made two title defenses in the UFC defeating Faber and his last fight against Demetrious Johnson in October of 2011.

“The Dominator” then coached The Ultimate Fighter Live Season with Faber to lead to a fight at UFC 148 in July of 2012 and ended up tearing his ACL in training. Cruz then suffered a another setback in rehab and had to have another ACL surgery with the UFC stating that if he couldn’t be healthy to fight in early 2014 he would be stripped of the title.

Faber has won four fights in a row since losing to Barao at UFC 149 in July of 2012. “The California Kid” last fought at UFC on Fox 9 in December defeating Michael McDonald.

Barao hasn’t lost in 32 fights and defeated Eddie Wineland in his last fight at UFC 165 in September. The UFC has stated that Barao vs Faber will be the main event of the show.

UFC 169 takes place on Saturday, February 1 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
