Rey Mysterio is officially free of WWE

Rey Mysterio finally got his wish. He’s done with WWE. TMZ is reporting that WWE and Mysterio have officially parted ways. There’s a tell too at WWE.com where Mysterio’s profile is now listed among the alumni section.

Mysterio hadn’t been seen in a WWE ring since his April 7, 2014, loss to Bad News Barrett. However, he did start a #FreeRey campaign and appeared in a video at AAA’s Triplemania saying he’d be seeing fans of the lucha promotion very soon.

Coincidentally (or not), AAA has a press conference scheduled for Tuesday in Mexico City, according to the Wrestling Observer. Mysterio is also scheduled to do an interview with MLW Radio over WrestleMania weekend. So there could be some juicy tidbits on the way.

Mysterio is likely headed to a place that will appreciate his talents, which unfortunately cannot be said for WWE. Though Mysterio was given runs with the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship (and winning the 2006 Royal Rumble), he was always booked as a weak champion.

I guarantee that Mysterio will be treated as a top-tier star in AAA (and probably Lucha Underground). The only question is if his knees can hold up to see it through.

Meanwhile, WWE is still searching for its next lucha superstar.
